Bell ringer-September 29 You are living in Europe during the Middle Ages. Given the choice, would you rather be the king/queen, a baron/noble, a knight, or a peasant and why?

King: ruled the kingdom Baron/noble: leased land from king, serve royal council, provide knights for war, pay taxes Knights: military, protect king & baron, leased land from barons Peasants: land from knights, provided food & service for higher classes, no rights, needed permission to marry

Which class would you choose now? Why? (Write for 1 minute)

Establishing the Magna Carta The people were like: Kings were not effective (didn’t get a lot done) Lost land Increased taxes Arrested people w/o trials

The Magna Carta church free from governmental interference, 1215 A.D. the rights of all free citizens to own and inherit property protected from excessive equality before the law 1215 A.D. Gave rights to the people (nobles), and eventually commoners too Bound the king to certain laws
