What needs to be included? Characters Setting Conflict Plot Rhythm Problem that must be resolved

Step 1: Brainstorm In your spiral, brainstorm events from your own life that you could tell a story about. Think about a moment with a younger sibling or grandparent that was special. Perhaps a funny memory of a vacation or a first in your life. (First ball game, first time playing an instrument or riding a bike) You should have enough details to be able to share the story as a poem. LIFE EVENT SOME NOTES ABOUT THIS 1. Moving back to California -Cross country road trip with my dad & dog -Had to get there in 3 days -No sleeping allowed in the car -Ate a lot of junk food/fast food -Dad drove most of the way and we played games -Made it to California in time

Step 2: Ask Yourself…. (Answer in your spiral-complete sentences) 1. Does your example have characters? Who are they? 2. Does your example have a setting? What is it? 3. Does your example have a problem that must be solved? Explain it. 4. Who will be the one speaking in your poem?

The Trip Dad and I took an adventure We began our journey across the country, 3 days to get there 3,000 miles to travel. “No sleeping,” said Dad. He wanted me awake, Those long 15 hour days. I sure did have to eat a lot of sugar. “I see I spy,” he would say And I knew it was time to play a game. If only my dog could talk, Then I could sleep. 3 days later we saw, “Welcome to California”. We were almost there! My excitement grew as we pulled up to my new home. I felt like a little girl in a candy store.
