3.4 (Day 1) Linear Equations Today’s Date: 11/6/17

Forms of Linear Equations Standard Form: - No Fractions & A is positive Slope-Intercept Form: m is slope b is y-intercept: (0, b) Point-Slope Form: m is slope is point on line Need to calculate slope

Ex 1) Find an equation of the line with slope -2 & passes through (-1, 4) & Draw Graph y x (-1, 4) Graph point (-1, 4) Move slope (Down 2, Right 1 OR Up 2, Left 1)

Ex 2) Find an equation of the line with slope 3 & y-intercept -2 & Draw Graph y x Graph y-intercept (0, -2) Move slope (Up 3, Right 1 OR Down 3, Left 1) (0, -2) If want Standard Form:

3.4 (Day 2) Linear Functions Today’s Date: 11/6/17

Use slope = 4/3 and point (0, 4) and plug into slope formula Ex 3) Find an equation, in Standard Form, of the line with x-int –3 & y-int 4 x-int: (–3, 0) y-int: (0, 4) Use slope = 4/3 and point (0, 4) and plug into slope formula

Parallel & Perpendicular Lines ║ Parallel lines have SAME slope ┴ Perp lines have Opposite Reciprocal slopes

Ex 4) Find an eqtn in Point-Slope Form of the line through (–7, 2) and perpendicular to –2x + 3y = 7 Find slope of –2x + 3y = 7: ┴ slope:

Find slope of 9x – 7 = 3y: m = 3 ║ slope = 3 & y-int 5 = b y = mx + b Ex 5) Find eqtn in Slope-Intercept form of the line with y-int 5 and parallel to 9x – 7 = 3y Find slope of 9x – 7 = 3y: m = 3 ║ slope = 3 & y-int 5 = b y = mx + b y = 3x + 5

Ex 6) Piecewise Function (broken line) Draw the graph of: It’s a function, it passes the vertical line test y x then erase right of 2 then erase left of 2

It’s only going thru the x-axis Ex 7) T.O.O. Find an equation in Standard Form of the line through (5, 7) & slope is undefined OR (5, 7) Undefined It’s only going thru the x-axis x = 5
