Technology Session Introduction Birmingham 26th-27th July 2016 C. H. Shepherd-Themistocleous (RAL) 26th-27th July 2016 C. Shepherd-Themistocleous, RAL

C. Shepherd-Themistocleous, RAL Technology New session for this meeting Technology Roadmap part of PPAP remit From Terms of Reference – “Develop and maintain a technology roadmap for their area of research” Distinguish between Detector systems developments for specific experiments Specific technology developments that could be used in many experiments 26th-27th July 2016 C. Shepherd-Themistocleous, RAL

C. Shepherd-Themistocleous, RAL SB Questions One of the question areas for the review is technology. Questions are: What are the key technologies in your area where the UK is world leading and how do they generate benefit for the UK? How could STFC support the development of critical technologies that will be essential to support the field in the future? 26th-27th July 2016 C. Shepherd-Themistocleous, RAL

C. Shepherd-Themistocleous, RAL Technology Funding Current mechanisms are through PRD grants of 2 years or PPRP reviewed project grants for specific experiments. Issue longer term support for particular technological developments. e.g. example today is CMOS sensors. Question: Is it desirable to have an alternative mechanism for funding such activities? Caveat: There is no more money. Flat cash is what we have in the near term. Purpose of discussion session today. 26th-27th July 2016 C. Shepherd-Themistocleous, RAL

C. Shepherd-Themistocleous, RAL Talks today Examples of technology areas where funding has been or could be separate from specific experiments. CMOS Report – Fergus Wilson Future computing – Pete Clarke Example of application of technology developed within Particle Physics being applied elsewhere. LSST – Ulrik Egede 26th-27th July 2016 C. Shepherd-Themistocleous, RAL
