Objectives Log on & off, shut down, and restart the computer Identify elements of the OS desktop Identify the icons used to represent drives, disks, files, and folders Manipulate Windows Start & run programs Manage files Solve file problems

Start Up Process Power On POST BIOS (ROM) searches for OS to load Checks RAM, keyboard & drives BIOS (ROM) searches for OS to load Location of OS is usually C: OS loaded in RAM Drivers loaded GUI loaded & displayed

Log On Select user & enter password

Windows 7 Desktop Recycle Bin, Folder/Shortcut on Desktop, Open Folder takes you to Windows Explorer, Desktop/Wallpaper, Start Button, Pinned Taskbar Items, Taskbar (with open windows/programs minimized), Date/Time Notification area (with programs running in background), Show Desktop button

Let’s Try It What programs are pinned on your computer? Search for Word, Excel, or PowerPoint When the list of programs displays, right-click and select Pin to Start Menu Search for Paint Pin it to the Start Menu Then, find it in the Pinned Area, right-click on it & unpin it

Review When you click the Start button, what are the programs in the top area above the separator line? Pinned items What is the bar that goes across the bottom of the desktop? Taskbar Name the area with the clock & the programs running in the background. Notification area

Restarting the Computer Warm Boot/Task Manager/Non- Responsive Programs Ctrl +Alt + Delete Cold Boot Powering it off with power button Wait 30 seconds before turning back on

Review Which keyboard command will cycle through open programs? Alt+Tab or Windows+Tab Which keyboard command will allow you to end a non-responsive program or shutdown/restart a computer? Ctrl + Alt + Del To access Help in Windows or most programs, which key would you press? F1
