Agenda CBI: A definition and rationale Demonstration: Número Misterioso Curriculum Development Process Curriculum overview First/Second Thematic Units Second/Third Thematic Units Sample Unit: “All About Me” Questions

Content-based Instruction What? An approach to language instruction that integrates the teaching of concepts from subject matter classes (e.g. math, science, etc) within the context of teaching the foreign language (Crandall & Tucker, 1990). The amount of content varies depending on the program. There is a wide spectrum of programs. Immersion being one extreme where all academic content is taught through the language, to partial immersion, to content-based, content-related.

Content-based Instruction Why? Comprehensible input Development of academic language which leads to higher levels of proficiency Interpersonal communication ZPDs and differentiation Cognitively demanding and intrinsically interesting (Curtain and Dahlberg, 2015) Motivating: connects with a variety of interests, strengths, academic backgrounds Supports academic content knowledge of other subjects Comp input (i+1), comprehensible (context, manipulatives/gestures, visuals, hands-on demonstrations, comprehension checks) 5-7 yesrs to develop academic language (CALP) (BICS) 1-2 years – start early Interpersonal communication and output is needed for acquisition but also one of communicative modes – lots to talk about (what is happening, what do you see, what do you think? What are you wondering about?) Classes of different levels (allows for differentiation) students can be challenged cognitive and linguistic levels
