The Way, Truth, and Life Setting of John 14 Pharisees were plotting to kill Jesus (John 11:7-8, 16, 57) Jesus had raised Lazarus from the dead Caused many to believe Caused further determination in the Pharisees Jesus was greeted with kingly praises (John 12:13) Caused further frustration in the Pharisees (John 12:19) Jesus was leaving soon Disciples could not follow yet (John 13:33, 36-37) Jesus gave hope of a reunion (John 14:1-4) They still didn’t quite understand (John 14:5)

The Way, Truth, and Life “I am the way” The destination is the Father’s house – heaven Jesus provided access with his sacrifice (Heb. 10:19-22) Not animal sacrifices (Heb. 10:4) Not personal sacrifices/good works (Matt. 18:24; Eph. 2:8-9) Access for all through Jesus (Eph. 2:18) People try to find other ways Our own righteousness (Rom. 10:1-4) Trust in self (Luke 18:9) Jesus is the only way (John 14:6; 10:9)

The Way, Truth, and Life “I am the truth” Jesus is “the Word” (John 1:1-3, 14, 17-18) God’s one, final, universal communication (Heb. 1:1-2) In contrast to the former partial, gradual communications God’s word is truth (John 18:37-38; 17:17) Because Jesus came, we can know the truth (John 8:31-32) Apostles commissioned to spread it (John 12:47-50; 14:25-26; 16:12-15; Mark 16:15-16) Not new personal revelations, not feelings Just belief in Jesus and his law

The Way, Truth, and Life “I am the life” Spiritual death is the consequence of sin (Rom. 6:23) The only way out of through Jesus Must have resurrection (I Cor. 15:12-20) Jesus raised Lazarus (John 11:23-27, 43-44) Jesus was raised himself (I Cor. 15:20-23) Some will be raised to life, some to death (John 5:28-29) Jesus has the words of life (John 6:68-69; Acts 5:20) Life is dependent on belief and obedience (John 3:35-36) Because he lives, we will also live (John 14:19)
