ROOSEVELT’S ADMINISTRATION

Becoming President Presidential Election of 1900: William McKinley is elected president, VP Theodore Roosevelt McKinley is assassinated, so… Roosevelt becomes President He continues the policy of imperialism (aka- intervening in the affairs of other countries)

Panama Canal Span.-Amer. War left the U.S. wanting a faster route between the Pacific and Atlantic oceans Panama was a province of Columbia where the French were building the canal Helps instigate the Panamanian Revolution against Columbia, so we can build the canal Canal opened in 1914, is 48 miles, and about 27, 500 people died building it

Big Stick Diplomacy “Speak softly and carry a big stick” U.S. is “an international police power” Our duty to ensure other nations order and prosperity in the Western Hemisphere We would intervene to prevent other nations from intervening

Domestic Reforms 1906: Hepburn Act, breaking up large industrial monopolies 1906: Pure Food and Drug Act, Meat Inspection Act (Sinclair) Conservationist Set aside 194 million acres of land for forests, wildlife preserves, parks, etc. Examples: Grand Canyon, Yosemite, Sierra Nevadas, etc.

Grand Canyon

Yosemite

“Teddy” Bear 1902: T.R. went on a bear hunt. The day had been unsuccessful. The guides and dogs captured an old female bear and tied it to a tree so the President could “get his shot.” But he refused. Theodore Roosevelt and the “Teddy” bear will always be remembered in children's stories, toys and political cartoons.
