Expedition and Route Planning.

Conditions of the Expedition section. For your Expedition section, you will need to plan, train for and complete an unaccompanied, self-reliant expedition with an agreed aim. You must do the correct training for your level. One practice expedition, a qualifying expedition (the one that is assessed) and a final presentation in order to complete the section. Your expedition must be completed by your own physical efforts with minimal external intervention and without motorised assistance. Your route should also be a continuous journey.

Conditions of the Expedition section. Your expedition must be by your own physical effort, without any motorised or outside assistance. Your expedition must be unaccompanied and self-sufficient. Your expeditions must be supervised by an adult who is able to accept responsibility for the safety of you and your team. Your expedition must have an aim. You must be properly equipped for your expedition. You must have completed the required training and practice expeditions. At least one practice expedition must be undertaken. You and your team must plan and organise your expedition. You must be assessed by an approved accredited Assessor to the DofE.

Conditions of the Expedition section. You must be within the qualifying age of the DofE programme level. Your overnight accommodation should be camping. Your expedition must be the minimum number of days required for your DofE level. Your expedition should normally take place between the end of March and the end of October. Your expedition should be in the recommended environment for your DofE level. You must do the minimum hours of planned daily activity for your DofE level. You should cook and eat a substantial meal each day. You must create and deliver a presentation after your expedition to complete the section.

Expedition Overveiw. Bronze Level Expedition. Duration - 2 days and 1 night. Minimum hours of planned activity each day - At least 6 hours during the daytime. (at least 3 of which must be spent journeying) Minimum walking distance is 8 kilometres per day. Land environment is rural countryside.

What to do in five simple steps: Step 1 - Preparation. You will need to plan your expedition, including team members, its aim and the environment you'll travel through. Step 2 - Training. You will undertake training in general expedition skills. Step 3 - Practice expedition. You will complete one day walk/navigation exercise. You must do one practice expedition including overnight camping to travel safely and complete your qualifying expedition. (2 days over a weekend)

What to do in five simple steps: Step 4 - Qualifying expedition. Once you are fully prepared, you'll do your qualifying expedition, which will be observed by a DofE-accredited Assessor. Your Leader and/or Expedition Supervisor will help you arrange this. On completion you'll be debriefed by your Assessor and then prepare and give a presentation of your expedition, which must cover your aim(s), experiences and outcomes. You can give this presentation to your Assessor, your Expedition Supervisor and parents. You will produce a PowerPoint presentation with pictures or video, it's up to you.

What to do in five simple steps: Step 5 – Assessment. Your final assessment will be from your Assessor/Expedition Supervisor who saw your presentation.

Planning a Route. Day 1 – Linear trail that has a minimum of 8k starting from a given point to end at the given campsite. Day 2 – Linear trail that has the minimum of 8k finishing at the given end point. Both planned routes need to have estimated times and checkpoints to meet up with assessors/leaders with grid reference points. At least 5 checkpoints need to be marked up on the map. Route description is also needed. Expedition route card needs to be completed.
