Five-Minute Check (over Lesson 8–2) Main Idea Example 1: Problem-Solving Strategy Lesson Menu
I will solve problems by using logical reasoning. Main Idea/Vocabulary
Of the students in a fifth grade class, 15 play basketball and 18 play soccer. Three of those students play both sports. How many students play only basketball? only soccer? Example 1
Understand What facts do you know? 15 students play basketball. 18 students play soccer. 3 of those students play both sports. What do you need to find? The number of students that play only basketball and only soccer. Example 1
Plan One way to solve the problem is to make a Venn diagram. A Venn diagram uses overlapping circles to show how common elements among sets of objects are related. The overlapping section shows the objects that are in both groups. Example 1
Both Basketball and Soccer Basketball Only Both Basketball and Soccer Soccer Only Solve Draw two overlapping circles to represent the two different sports. Since 3 students are involved in both sports, place a 3 in the overlapping section. Use subtraction to determine the number for each of the other sections. 15 – 3 = 12 3 18 – 3 = 15 only basketball: 15 – 3 = 12 only soccer: 18 – 3 = 15 Example 1
Check Look back at the problem. Check each circle to make sure that the correct number of students is represented. Example 1
