KWL--Genetics What do I already know about genetics?

ACTIVATOR---WORD SPLASH--GENETICS List as many words that come to mind when you hear the word “genetics”.

Important Terms Law of segregation Law of independent assortment Progeny True breed Carrier Homozygous vs. heterozygous Dominant vs. recessive Locus Monohybrid vs. dihybrid cross vs. trihybrid Testcross Incomplete dominance Codominance Pleiotropy epistasis

Bozeman Video—Mendelian Genetics http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NWqgZUnJdAY

Progeny—offspring Purebred—homozygous (AA or aa) Carrier—heterozygous (Aa)

TEST CROSS-involves breeding an unknown genotype with a homozygous recessive

If a purple and a white flower can only produce purple offspring, what is the genotype of the purple parent?

Example R= Round seeds Y= yellow seeds R = wrinkled seeds y = green seeds 2 seeds are crossed both heterozygous for both traits. Predict the genotype and phenotype frequencies.

Phenotype Answer 9/16 = round yellow 3/16 = round green 3/16 = wrinkled yellow 1/16 = wrinkled green

Example A red flower is crossed with a white flower. This type of flower shows incomplete dominance. Predict the phenotypic ratio of offspring.

Other examples: Weight, height

ACTIVATOR: What’s the probability of getting an offspring showing hetereozygous for all 3 traits? AaBBcc x aaBbCc
