Stories from Ancient Egypt Grade 6 Mrs. Fijalkowski and Mr. Foley

The Five Elements of a Story A Story has Five Basic Elements Characters Setting Plot Conflict Resolution

Main Character Make your main character quirky or unforgettable. A little personality will intrigue the reader. The characters are the subjects of the story and they are the ones who move the action along and they are in the center of the conflict. When creating a character think about physical attributes and personality traits. The reader should be able to visualize the main character. The main character should stay true to the author’s description throughout the story.

Setting The setting is where and when the story takes place. The setting should be described with enough detail so that the reader can picture or visualize the scene. The setting helps the reader to feel connected to the plot. The setting is a place to include a few facts about Ancient Egypt.

Plot The Plot is the action in the story. It should have a clear beginning, middle and ending. The Plot must include description and detail and a few twists and turns. Adding suspense keeps the reader, reading until the last page.

Conflict Every good story has a problem to solve. The Plot or action of the story centers aound the conflict. The main character attempts to solve the problem and is embroiled in the conflict and the most exciting part, right before the resolution, is called the Climax.

Resolution The resolution is the way the conflict is resolved. Often, the main character learns a lesson and grows and changes by the end of the story.

The Hardest Part! Thinking Before you begin to write your story, you need to create a storyline. This happens in your head. Thinking is hard work! You think, think and think until you have an idea that excites you. Once you have a basic idea or storyline, add the ingredients and you’re on your way to becoming an author.

Storyline Example of Storylines My story is about the son of a Pharaoh who lost his pet cat and the God Bastet, who he called on for help. My story is about a girl who fell asleep in a pyramid while on a school trip. My story is about a careless boy, a thief, a priceless vase and a powerful god. My story is about a slave child whose father was injured while building a pyramid. What does your father do for a living? My dad makes mummies. Ever since I was a little girl I dreamed of the invitation to the big event arriving to my clay hut. Dying is not the end of the world in Ancient Egypt. It is only the beginning.

Let the Creative Juices Flow Have fun creating a memorable main character and describe the setting in detail. Throw in a few twists and turns and you’ll wow your audience with a page turner. Resolve the conflict and your story will be a success! Let the Thinking begin.
