Introduction Gemination is a dental phenomenon that appears to be two teeth developed from one tooth bud. Geminated tooth (also called double tooth or twinning ) is counted as one tooth. There are a normal number of teeth in the mouth.

How common is geminated tooth? It has been reported to occur in the baby teeth in anywhere from 0.5% to 2.5% of Caucasian children. It is more common in Asian children, which accounts for 5% or more. It occurs most commonly in the upper front teeth. However, it can also occur on the lower teeth as well.

Possible causes (etiology) Hereditary factors Crowding of tooth germs Trauma Systemic disease Environmental factors

Consequence/Effect Crowding Atypical spacing between the teeth Delay the eruption of the permanent teeth underneath

Role of Dental Team X-ray: to monitor the permanent teeth underneath it to ensure that they come in normal. Sealant: place in deep groove between the “two” teeth to help prevent cavity.
