Monday Today I am learning when it is better to use a fraction, a decimal, or a percent because this will allow me to make comparisons and solve problems. Grades Percents Percents Taxes/Tips Percent = part out of 100 Shopping/Discounts Taxes/Tips Percents Percent = part out of 100 Percents are used in :

Percents Percents = parts per 100 To help you remember: There are 100 cents in a dollar. There are 100 years in a century.

Percents Percents are PART of a WHOLE Percents are out of 100 % = percent sign 6% means “6 per hundred” or “6 out of 100”

Representing Percents To represent 20%: As a fraction: As a picture: As a decimal: 0.2 In grades 4 and 5, students learned how to write equivalent fractions and decimals. Emphasize to students that 20% can be written as 20/100 . From there, you may need to review simplifying the fraction and generating the decimal. 20 out of 100 squares are shaded

Your Turn… Complete the table on your Guided Notes. Monitor students as they complete the table. When students are finished, debrief the problems to clear up any misconceptions. Reteach as necessary.

Let’s try… Find 50% of 12. Find 20% of 45. Find 15% of 100. Monitor students as they complete the problems. When students are finished, debrief the problems to clear up any misconceptions. Reteach as necessary.

Applications of Percent Tip - money you give to the server for their service. Most people give between 15% and 20%. This is in addition to the cost of the meal or service. Applications of Percent

To find the amount of tip to leave: You and your best friend go out for dinner. Your bill is $30. You had awesome service so you decide to leave a 20% tip. How much tip should you leave? How much total will you leave? To find the amount of tip to leave: 20% of 30 = 0.20  30 = $6 To find the total amount to leave: Tip + Bill $6 + $30 = $36

Your turn… You take your family out to dinner for pizza and soda. Your bill comes and it’s $25.00. You decide to leave a 15% tip. How much is the tip? What is the total bill? After students complete the problem, discuss the solution process and clarify any misconceptions.

Applications of Percent Discount – an amount that is deducted from the regular price of an item to determine the sale price

To find the amount of savings: You want to buy a pair of $80 shoes. Today is your lucky day because you have a “30% off” coupon. How much will you save? How much is the sale price? To find the amount of savings: 30% of 80 = 0.30  80 = $24 To find the sale price: Regular price – savings (discount) = sale price $80 - $24 = $56

Your turn… A shirt is regularly priced at $40 but is on sale for 25% off. How much will you save? How much is the sale price? After students complete the problem, discuss the solution process and clarify any misconceptions.

Wednesday’s – Warm UP Jenny earned a 75% on Math quiz. If there were 20 questions on the quiz, how many questions did she answer correctly? Show your work and explain your answer using a sentence.

Using the PROPORTION METHOD, the set-up is always the same: PERCENT – the number with the percent sign (%) PART – the number with the word is. WHOLE – the number with the word of.

Partner discussion… Explain to your shoulder partner how to solve a percent problem when solving for the WHOLE.

Closing thoughts… Explain how you know if you are solving a percent problem for the PART or for the WHOLE.
