Course Information

Course Description This course is designed to develop students into competent users of statistics in real situations. Therefore students will be immersed in real problems using real data that can be meaningfully explored only with statistical methods. As in real situations, students will be expected to justify the techniques they use, fully explain their process, and interpret their results in the context of the problem.  AP Statistics is an activity-based course in which students actively construct their own understanding of the concepts and techniques of statistics.

Course Description Classes will consist of activities and discussions in addition to some lectures. The statistical topics include Exploring Data, Planning and Design of a Study, Anticipating Patterns, and Statistical Inference. In addition, instruction on technology, with emphasis on the TI-84+, is incorporated into regular class activities. A graphing calculator is required for this course and students will be expected to learn the technology as well as the statistical concepts of the course. Students are expected to learn to apply the various techniques and formulas, as well as to explain how and why they work. However, it is equally important for students to become highly proficient in the use of the graphing calculator as it applies to this course. Some calculators are available for issue through the school, but every student is strongly encouraged to consider purchasing one for themselves, as these calculators are useful not just in AP Statistics, but in Physics, Chemistry, Calculus, Economics and many other classes students will encounter in high school and college.

In order to ensure that students are prepared for that exam, review sessions will be announced in the spring. Students enrolled in AP Statistics are expected to strive to take the AP Exam and therefore will be expected to attend some or all of these

Students enrolled in AP Statistics are expected to strive to take the AP Exam and therefore will be expected to attend some or all of these review sessions. Your Student Learning Objectives (SLO) Test counts as 20% of course average.

Types of Course Assignments Homework Assignments Daily Checks Quizzes Tests Final Exam

Homework Assignments Homework will be given almost every class. I will check it at least twice a week.

Skills Checks Daily Checks Skills Checks are graded assignments given after each concept. These online assignments will be given online on www.tenmarks.com. Daily checks are in-class assignments given after each concept. These will usually be just like homework assignments and you may use your notes and homework for assistance.

Quizzes Quizzes are in class assignments given after every 2 or 3 concepts. You may not use any notes, etc. for assistance.

Tests Tests are given after every unit. Final Comprehensive Exam will be at the end of academic year covering all topics in course.

CDA Expectations Stands for Common District Assessment Every Douglas County student enrolled in a high school math class will take the same exact test for that class. These grades entered in the gradebook cannot be curved. CDA’s are designed by teachers in the county. Very important CDA’s are used to place students in remediation or enrichment for ILT

Student Learning Objectives (SLO) SLOs is a cumulative test given to students at the beginning and end of the year to determine student growth in understanding of topics specific to Accelerated Pre-Calculus.

Grading Plan Formative Assessments – 30% (Skills Checks, Daily Checks, Homework Assignments) Summative Assessment – 50% (Common Unit Assessment, Common District Assessment, Projects) Student Learning Objectives/Final– 20%

Class Rules Follow all LSHS Rules & Policies Be respectful to your instructors and your peers. Be responsible for your own learning. Arrive prepared and on time. Keep workstations clean and neat. Electronics are not allowed in class.

Your Space & My Space Your spaces in the classroom are the student station, turn in table, and your individual desk. My spaces in the classroom are EVERYTHING else. Do not touch any part of my space unless requested by instructor.

Class Expectations & Policies

Class Policies No make up (or “do-overs”) for any assignment Extra credit will be given at the teachers discretion throughout the academic year. If you’re absent and missed any assignments, it is your responsibility to come after school to complete assignments or zero will be given. Late assignments are not accepted. Cheating on any assignment will result in a zero as the final grade and a discipline referral. All students are expected to seat in assigned seats at ALL times.

Course Expectations Regular attendance in the class is important for success in this rigorous course. Consistently bring necessary materials to class. Completing ALL homework assignments are essential for retaining concepts. Participate in class discussions and activities Question anything that is not fully understood

Homework Expectations Homework will be given every night. Usually about 8 to 12 problems (not that much) Should not take more than 45 minutes Some of the problems will be easier than others. If you have trouble with more than one or two problems, you SHOULD email me immediately. If you just show up and say “I just did not understand” or “I just could not do it”, you will receive a zero.
