Presenting Academic Papers

We will talk about …. What academic papers are Why we present academic papers How to convert an academic paper to a presentation

What are academic papers? Writing done by scholars for other scholars Devoted to topics and questions that of interest to the academic community Present the reader with an informed argument that will help the reader to better understand your topic Intended for informing, arguing and meeting the expectations of the academic reader

Structure of an academic paper Abstract Introduction Background history, literature review, methodology Results / findings Discussion findings Conclusion Works cited / references

Why present academic papers? To communicate the importance of your research To showcase your research findings and discuss them To prompt others in the academic community to ask questions and give you feedback

Creating an oral presentation from an academic paper Identify the most important parts and points Structure your slides: - Title - Introduction - Research questions - Literature review - Data collection methods - Data presentation / findings - Conclusion Focus more on findings, not so much on theories

Introduction - extract important points from the introduction in your paper Use an image to convey the main point of research Introduction should point to research questions Emphasize your research contributes to existing research in the field Use the literature review to establish the importance of your work Explain data collection methods E.g. interviews, personal observations, questionnaires

Use a table / graph /chart for statistical data For interview data, use an interview question for each theme Show parts of findings you wish to highlight Underscore the conclusion Remember, as few words as possible on each slide Use images to convey your points visually
