Title the next page in your sketchbook: “EMPHASIS” Objective: You will select art elements and apply design principles in order to achieve the desired compositional effect. DRILL: Title the next page in your sketchbook: “EMPHASIS” Take the picture from the corner of your table. (You need colored pencils and glue.) Use color to emphasize one object in the still life picture.

Use COMPOSITION techniques- Why not in the middle? Use COMPOSITION techniques- Size, view, or placement?

How does the red apple CONTRAST from the rest? How is the red apple emphasized? Why does it stand out? Contrast means opposites that makes other objects stand out. Also means difference. How does the red apple CONTRAST from the rest?

EMPHASIS 1. Emphasis is… You can create emphasis by… What is contrast? Which object? How? A. B. C. D. 1. Emphasis is… You can create emphasis by… What is contrast? My object(s) emphasized with color-

You can quickly create your page by hand instead of using the ready-made sheet that can be glued into your sketchbook.

How are we going to create emphasis? COLOR VS. BLACK AND WHITE TO MAKE THE FLOWER AND BOTTLE STAND OUT. What is emphasized? How? Line Color Value Shape Form Texture Size Shelby Weimer. Still Life. 2009

Emphasis draws attention to an object. What is emphasis? Emphasis draws attention to an object. Emphasis creates a focal point and makes object stand out. How do you create emphasis? Using contrast…of color, size, form, shape, etc… Dark vs. light, color vs. black and white, warm vs. cool Which object(s) are you going to emphasize using color?

CRITERIA Minimum of 7 objects on the white piece of paper that you look at in front of you. Drawn in pencil. (Except for maybe one object as that is EMPHASIZED in colored pencil.) Objects look realistic. Contour lines, ellipses, and angles. Shading makes objects look 3D. Background and entire picture is complete.

Goals for today: Finish drawing your objects. Add color to emphasize an object. Hang a few on the board at the end of class that show emphasis. BCPS Objective: You will select art elements and apply design principles in order to achieve the desired compositional effect. Our Objective: You will select color and apply contrast in order to achieve emphasis. You will use contrasting colors in order to create emphasis.

Do not clean up, yet! Look around at the artworks near you. Are there any with an object that is emphasized? Hang it on the board. What is emphasized? How? What is emphasis? What are other ways to create emphasis?

Did we meet our objective? Our Objective: You will select art elements (color) and apply design principles (contrast) in order to achieve the desired compositional effect (emphasis). You will use contrasting color schemes in order to achieve emphasis. Did you use color to create emphasis?

Can you please get a sponge and squeeze it out (to clean it) and wash a computer, a desk top around the room, a shelf something Thank you

Emphasis on Still Life DRILL: Objective: You will use observational drawing skills in order to draw and shade a still life. DRILL: Set up your still life and get your drawing. Think about which object you might add color to in order to create emphasis.
