Introduction to Design

Introduction to Design The Design Process The design process is an engineering activity that turns a concept into reality. The concept is a solution to a specific problem or a perceived need. The process from concept to solution is not random. It is a logical sequence of steps to develop the best solution to a specific problem.

The Design Process The design process is not a one-way street ending in the finished product. It is a series of stages and check-points where each step in this process can be reviewed and analyzed. Modifications or refinements can be made to the concept.

The Design Process Stages of the Design Process Conceptualization Problem Identification Conceptualization Refinement of Preliminary Ideas Design Analysis Development and Implementation Optimization Presentation

The Design Process Stage 1: Problem Identification Consisting of the following areas: Market Research Design Brief Identification and Classification of Constraints

The Design Process Stage 2: Conceptualization Consisting of the following areas: Research Data Collection Resources for Information Brainstorming Sketching Concept sketches of electronic device

The Design Process Stage 3: Refinement of Preliminary Ideas Consisting of the following areas: Identification of Workable Solutions Development of Detailed/Annotated Sketches Graphical Analysis of Possible Solutions

The Design Process Stage 4: Design Analysis Consisting of the following areas: Comparison of Alternatives and Specifications Creation of a Decision Making Matrix Generation of Alternate Solutions Narrowing of the Design Solutions

A Design Matrix Using a matrix, select a workable solution

The Design Process Stage 5: Development and Implementation Consisting of the following areas: Detailed Documentation of the Final Design Prototyping of the Design Solution Testing and Analysis

The Design Process Stage 6: Optimization Consisting of the following areas: Reassessment of Design Specifications Implementation of Modifications Update of Drawings

The Design Process Stage 7: Presentation Consisting of the following areas: Oral Report Written Report Visual Aids/Models
