OMP 15th May 2017 Krzysztof Brodzinski and Nicolas Bonetti LHC cryogenic turbines spare parts management – update including Atlas and CMS OMP 15th May 2017 Krzysztof Brodzinski and Nicolas Bonetti

Outlook Introduction – criticality analysis Actual spares management Open actions and conclusions This analysis is an update of information already presented in OMPs on 2012.12.06 and on 2016.07.04 – for full picture of the analysis please refer to these previous presentations. K.Brodzinski_OMP_2017.05.15

Introduction – criticality analysis (LHC) There are 4 types of 4.5 K cold boxes on the LHC equipped with 64 expansion turbines (28 installed on AL cold boxes and 36 installed on Linde cold boxes). At the end of 2012 dedicated criticality analysis for spare management has been completed. Three categories of criticality were defined and approach for spares completed. Cat. 1: red – operation without the turbine results in a considerable loss in refrigeration power Cat 2: yellow – operation without the turbine is possible with a moderate loss in refrigeration power Cat 3: green – operation without this turbine is possible with nearly no loss in refrigeration power as the refrigeration power loss can be compensated with LN2. LHCB P18 (AL) LHCA P2 (AL) LHCA P4 (L) LHCB P4 (AL) LHCA P6 (L) LHCB P6 (L) LHCA P8 (AL) LHCB P8 (L) We have on LHC: 36 red, 10 yellow and 18 green turbines. (AL: 16 red, 4 yellow, 8 green) K.Brodzinski_OMP_2017.05.15

LHC spares Actually each type of turbine with criticality 1 and 2 has a spare available at CERN. For turbines with criticality 3 dedicated contracts minimizing repair to max. 4 weeks were signed with AL and Linde for 10 years service (2012 to 2022), the critical pieces “on shelves at the supplier” had to be bought. To be checked if true because of 32/45 adaptation flange installed on QURA TU7 K.Brodzinski_OMP_2017.05.15

ATLAS and CMS spares Concerning Atlas and CMS – all turbines are considered as critical and each turbine has a spare available at CERN. Additionally fast repairs option is possible for CMS TUs with fabricated critical spare parts. K.Brodzinski_OMP_2017.05.15

Conclusions and open points Criticality analysis with spares management put in place for LHC from 2012 works fine ATLAS and CMS TUs are fully covered with spares 1:1 Compatibility of the same spare for Linde QSRB TUA and QURA TU7 is to be checked Decision from OMP (2016.07.04): TU4 of AL QSRB – fast repairs option with delay of 4 weeks is to be signed with AL (start investment of ~19 keuro, repairs cost higher by 5 keuro vs standard option) Thank you for your attention!
