National Digital Stewardship Alliance Web Archiving Survey Update Abbie Grotke Library of Congress Web Archiving Team Lead & NDSA Content Working Group Co-Chair abgr@loc.gov @agrotke

An initiative of the National Digital Information Infrastructure and Preservation Program (NDIIPP) A collaborative effort among government agencies, educational institutions, non-profit organizations, and business entities to preserve a distributed national digital collection for the benefit of citizens now and in the future. Community-driven, action-oriented

NDSA Working Groups Content Outreach Innovation Infrastructure Members commit to participating in one of the five working groups of the Alliance: Content Outreach Innovation Infrastructure The Content Working Group is focusing on investigating guidelines for the selection of significant content, discovery of at-risk digital content or collections, and engaging all stakeholders in the process of acquiring the content, preserve it, and provide access to it. Standards & Practices

2013 Web Archiving Survey Goal: to find out the scope of collecting web content in the United States: policies (collecting, permissions, and access) services and tools used staffing, skills, major challenges, and more! plus: how things have changed since original survey in 2011 27 questions, developed by CWG members

Exploring in 2013 What types of content folks are concerned about archiving What metrics are important? What skills are essential? How many FTEs are dedicated? More on copyright and access policies Length of embargo periods Based on feedback from 2011 survey and interests of CWG members developing survey

Very Very Preliminary Results so preliminary, we’re not done surveying yet survey open Oct 22 through Nov 30

50 responses so far Majority College and university then Archives State government and so forth

Most respondents so far are actively capturing And most are outsourcing: 35 using external services 25 of those using Archive-IT Only 10 of 35 have transferred data from service to local institution I know there are more archive-it partners out there…
