THE BEGINNING OF HOCKEY Hockey is an old sport. Early on, people played on frozen ponds with sticks and a ball. Hockey became organized when people made rinks, scheduled games, and created rules. The first recorded hockey games were played in Canada around 1850. A long time ago, hockey players had different equipment than we use today. People played with a square, wooden puck. They did not wear helmets or face shields. Hockey became so popular in Canada that the Governor General donated a trophy for the championship. The trophy is the Stanley Cup.
