The North vs. The South

Lets play a game!

In my region religion and education was organized. Culture

NORTH!

Many people who immigrated to and lived here were merchants, manufacturers, wage earners, and new business owners. They brought many new ideas that helped to advance the territory. Culture/Economy

NORTH!

Long distance transporting of goods and products was done by steamboat and train. However, my railroad was a bit smaller and less advanced. Transportation

SOUTH!

Cities in my territory developed along rivers and ports Cities in my territory developed along rivers and ports. They also grew along the Gulf and Atlantic Coasts. Geography

In my territory public services such as education were offered and cities were considered centers of art culture and education. Cities

NORTH!

My population grew from 5 million to 31 million in ONLY 60 years!! This was due to a wave of massive immigration. Population

NORTH!

Climate I have warm summers and snowy winters. It is not ideal to grow crops here. Climate

NORTH!

People from my area were against tariffs. Economy

The North has high tariffs on their exports but there were no tariffs on the South’s raw materials. This system caused the North to benefit financially twice over. SOUTH!

Culture Religion and education was not organized in my territory. The best educated were the sons of planters but the vast majority of people were small farmers which had little to no education. Culture

SOUTH!

Cities Most people lived on farms here. Industries and towns grew at a slower pace here. Only a few large cities developed as trading centers. Cities

SOUTH!

This territory is generally warm and sunny with long, hot, and humid summers. It also has mild winters and heavy rainfall. The climate was excellent for agriculture because of it’s heavy rainfall. Climate

This territory’s economy was based off of many different industries.

NORTH!

Geography The Atlantic coastal plain on my side. I also have areas that are fertile with rich soils and swamps. Geography

Geography In here there are a lot of waterfalls People began using the waterfalls as an energy source to run factories Geography

Hydroelectricity began during this time!! NORTH!

In here, cities were crowded and dirty but in the 1830’s improvements were made. Some of the improvements included: Harbors and streets Sanitation Police force Cities

NORTH!

The population here was mainly Europeans and enslaved African Americans. Most people who live here were farmers. Population

SOUTH!

Transportation This place had many surfaced roads made. There were canals being built and used. The railroad was vast and spread throughout the territory. It was also very advanced. Transportation

NORTH!

The terrain here was rocky with many hills, but there are many forests and trees. The timber from the forest was used in the ship building industry. Geography

NORTH!

Economy The economy here was based on agriculture It developed “cash crops” which were raised to be sold for a profit Economy

SOUTH!
