Introduction to John Steinbeck’s Writing Style Of Mice and Men Introduction to John Steinbeck’s Writing Style

Characteristics of his writing… John Steinbeck’s novels can be classified as social novels that deal with the economic problems of rural labor. Show a love of the land

How he prepared… To prepare for writing about laborers, he traveled and lived with migrants. Worksheet Define Migrant:

Of Mice and Men Novella: between a short story and a novel (30,000-50,000 words) Published in 1937 Deals with the loneliness and victimization of wandering farmhands who dream of the “perfect” or idyllic farm Portrays picturesque or pleasing scenes of country life

Of Mice and Men continued… He was chosen as one of 1937’s Ten Outstanding Men in America Designed so it could be made into a play with almost no changes Theatrical versions (plays) were presented at the same time as the publication of the novel with great success

Author’s Style… Rich characterization—uses adverbs to describe character’s actions Figurative Language Foreshadowing Novella

Style… Uses simple language that carries deeper meanings behind it: the characters are generally uneducated and use simple vocabulary but they still communicate about things that really matter Straightforward Uses dialogue to describe action rather than narration (show not tell) Language reads like real life

Controversy… Of Mice and Men was the 2nd most frequently banned book in the United States during the 1990’s Profane language Moral statement Treatment of the mentally challenged Violence Racist slang
