The interaction region for FIRST (status report) (FIRST meeting at GSI, November 25th 2010 ) Eleuterio Spiriti ( INFN Roma Tre ) Vertex and interaction region detectors requirements The FIRST setup The Air Box in the FIRST target chamber Beam entrance/exit window test Beam monitor status (from A. Paoloni) Start counter status (from A. Paoloni) Beam monitor/start counter schedule (from A. Paoloni) Measured M26 performances on Ions 8. FIRST target and vertex mechanics 9. Vertex cabling and patch panels 10. V1495 FPGA code design 11. JTAG initialization 12. FIRST vertex schedule Eleuterio Spiriti FIRST meeting GSI, 25-11-2010

Vertex (interaction region) detector requirements Carbon beam spot FWHM = 3mm -> Sensor active size in the range of cm2 Angular acceptance as large as possible (protons emitted at large angle) Angular resolution on two tracks separation ~ 0.3 deg (therapy requirements) Carbon interactions in Vertex sensors directly contribute to systematic!!! Overall sensors thickness ~1% of target thickness (~1cm). Angular resolution on two track separation ~ 0.3 deg (Therapy requirement). Carbon interactions in vertex sensors directly contribute to systematic!!! overall sensor thickness to few % of target thickness (~1cm). Dynamic range from 2 to 100 m.i.p. TPC pile-up and Hodo maximum DAQ rate limits the read out rate to few KHz and needed statistic to be collected to reach for desired measure precision fix the read out time to be << 1 ms. Few events superimposed in the Vertex could be disantangled using the beam-monitor position information. Eleuterio Spiriti FIRST meeting GSI, 25-11-2010

The FIRST setup Based on the large pre-existing ALADIN setup Large angle hodoscope ALADIN magnet MUSIC TPC TOF wall Neutron detector beam New interaction region. Beam monitor drift chamber Target Fragments Start counter 150 µm thick M26 vertex Large angle calorimeter Beam Goal: measure Z, A, emission angle and p of all fragments. Small angle calorimeter Eleuterio Spiriti FIRST meeting GSI, 25-11-2010

BEAM MONITOR STATUS (I) Slide from A. Paoloni (LNF) Drift chamber (old prototype) X-Y view : 4 planes per view Exagonal cell: 0.5 cm radius Ar-C02 operation Tested one year ago at LNS 12C beam with good results. Eleuterio Spiriti FIRST meeting GSI, 25-11-2010

BEAM MONITOR STATUS (II) New Beam Monitor: Rectangular Drift Cell (8 mm drift space) Six planes/view Less beam interaction with the wires Less border effect in the space-time relations Tracking redundancy Beam One layer for each view still to be wired (pins to be ordered) Slide from A. Paoloni (LNF) Eleuterio Spiriti FIRST meeting GSI, 25-11-2010

START COUNTER STATUS (I) First Start Counter prototype (100 micron scintillator + fibers read-out) tested at LNS with 12C during 2009: 300 ps resolution, dominated by small amplitude and bad noise rejection. Second Start Counter (150 micron scintillator + scintillator ribbons read-out) tested at LNS with 12C during 2010: bad light collection, due to light leaks in the bendings of the ribbons . Slide from A. Paoloni (LNF) Eleuterio Spiriti FIRST meeting GSI, 25-11-2010

START COUNTER STATUS (II) New Start Counter, 150 micron thick, with radial fibers read-out: ready by the end of February 2011 Support structure Slide from A. Paoloni (LNF) Eleuterio Spiriti FIRST meeting GSI, 25-11-2010
