Welcome to Year One

How is it different to upper foundation? At first not very. Provision is available although some areas are scaled down or not used as often as in foundation stage. Later in the year. Children will increase in their ability to be independent learners. At first they will work in groups led by an adult before working in groups on their own. Sometimes ability led, sometimes not. The unknown and new can be scary for some children, please let a member of the team know if anything is worrying your child.

Home learning Will be recorded in homework book/diary Will mostly be given weekly- given on a Monday and returned on a Monday May be challenges rather than written work. Please let us know in their book that it has been completed- a comment about how your child got on is wonderful!

Children should read at home to an adult for 10 mins everyday. Reading Children should read at home to an adult for 10 mins everyday. Adults should write in reading record each time they hear a child read – might only be a few pages. Try to find a quiet place to read with your child. Sometimes reading before school works well. Books should come into school everyday – reading days are variable. Some children might move to slightly easier books than they were reading in July if they haven’t retained their knowledge. Children will receive a variety of books - not just ORT.

Phonics Phonics is the method that we use to teach reading. Phonics lessons will take place daily. There is a Sound Mat in your pack covering the phonemes children are expected to know by next Summer. Please use it to support reading and spelling. Children will be assessed on their phonics knowledge regularly. If we send home sound flashcards please practise with your child. The government’s national Phonics Screen takes place the week of June 12th. Please do not book holidays in school time on either side of the Spring Bank Holiday.

Spelling Spellings will be given when your child is ready. Will mostly be “tricky words” but some will follow the spelling patterns learnt in class. Will be given as a worksheet but practise can be in any form you like to begin with. Ensure your child can use the words in sentences to check they understand what they are writing.

Writing We teach the cursive style in year one. We expect all learnt letters to be written correctly. Start on the line every time. Please encourage your child to use the cursive style (where able) at home in all their writing- you can do it too! Keep casually questioning- if they know how they should. There will be a parent consultation evening before half term.

Star of the week Given weekly as an additional reward to whole school schemes. Your child may get it once, twice or even three times during the school year. Please look after our Elephant Ellie with your child according to the instructions in the front of the book. Will be given on a Friday to be returned (and shared in class) on Monday.
