PREFACE Different social networking sites are now our part of life. Most of the modern people use any of those social sites like facebook, Twitter etc and most of the users of those are young. Most of our youngs now prefer social sites to pass leisure time than other. So this report is about the “Effects of social media on students”.

ACKNOWLEDGEMENT We thank the college students, who gave their valuable ideas and opinion on our survey and we are also grateful for their time for our survey.

INTRODUCTION: The definition of social media is “the relationships that exist between network of people”. In the last ten years, the online world has changed dramatically. However, many students are spending countless hours immersed in social media, such as Facebook, You tube etc. As social media sites continue to grow in popularity it is our belief that technology is a vital part of today’s student success equation.

Many researchers have been conducting into a considerable amount of research on how social media influences student attention at colleges. Many parents are worried about their college students are spending too much time on Facebook and other social media sites and not enough time studying. Therefore, our research ascertain the relationship between the social media and student’s study efficiency.

METHODOLOGY The survey has conducted by students of Industrial Engineering, CEG under the partnership of Deepika.D and Ganga.B. A questionnaire was conducted and it was circulated across hundred students. The sample selected was mainly for college students.

RESULTS AND FINDINGS To explore the relationship between social networks and impact on student’s academic performance, we chosen a sample of 60 students. Students have internet access in the college and their hostel/house. The conventional model of studying for the students is classroom instruction. While the institution facilities education through educational networks within the college like blackboard, the students are well exposed to online social networks.

USES OF SOCIAL NETWORKS From a sample of 60 students we found that all the students used one of the other social networking site. The social networking sites that students used for academic purposes included You tube, Whatsapp and Facebook. Whatsapp was the most used social media. You tube was the least used of all websites.

TIME SPENT ON SOCIAL NETWORKING SITES The respondents reported the number of hours they spend on social networks per day. 3.5% spent 13-24 hours per day, 37.9% spent less than 1 hour per day, 58.6% spend l-12 hours per day. They were no respondents who spent zero hours on the social networks. The consumption levels for 1-12 hours are the highest.

USES OF SOCIAL NETWORK SITES The highest score of 44.3% revealed that the students used it for chatting. Less score 1.5% used submitting articles to website. Downloading music and videos were not only educational but considered for several genres. Downloading music/videos, posting photos and chatting can be categorized as entertainment use. Educational uses like submitting articles, communicating with teachers/class fellows comprised of a lesser score

Only 1.5% used social media for submitting articles to website, 16.4% used for communication with teachers/class fellows. This reflects the social networking site were used by students for entertainment mostly and less for educational purpose.

SOCIAL NETWORKS AND E-LEARNING 86.4% students agreed that social networks were an effective e-learning tool. 13.6% students not agreed that social networks were an effective e-learning tool. 86.4% who were in favor felt that e-learning saved time.

CONCLUSION Our research has revealed that college students were likely to be affected by social media. Social media is attractive, it not only provides college students another world to make friends, also provides a good way to release pressure. To some degree, it absolutely affects the lives of college students including the grades. This research also indicates that an approach is needed to better balance the relationship between social media and academics only. Therefore, college students should think more about the balancing equation of social media and academics.

RECOMMENDATION Our research indicated that most college students would prefer to use social media and spend many hours checking social media sites. Social networking is definitely affecting students efficiencies as well as their grades. Hence, educators need to be concerned about these problems and try to find better ways to solve these problems. Although, framed within an academic context, the concepts outlined here can be utilized to investigate the use of communication technology not only at school, however also at home, workplace and various other settings, and for a variety of different audiences such as teenagers, young adults, the elderly or families.
