THE TOWER BRIDGE BY Ella clarke

WHY DID I PICK THE TOWER BRIDGE? I picked the tower bridge because I am going to London in the summer and I would like to know a bit about the tower Bridge when I go to see it. It is often called London Bridge but its real name is The Tower Bridge. The bridge that is there now is not actually the original Tower bridge.

THE original TOWER BRIDGE The original Tower bridge was finished in the 13th century. There was a number of Tower Bridges but this picture shows the 2nd last bridge built. The bridge is built over the river Thames. At first it had rows of houses and a chapel in the center It was 8m wide and 240-270m long It was supported by 19 arches By the start of 1358 it was a very popular bridge

The new TOWER bridge The new Tower Bridge was officially opened on June 30TH 1894 It takes about 61 seconds to open the draw-bridge It is opened 1,000 times a year When 78 buses were on the bridge in 1952 the draw-bridge opened and killed lots of people

THE RAISING OF THE BRIDGE The bridge is very famous because it is the only bridge that can be raised on the Thames It used to be raised 50 times a day but is reduced to 4-5 times a day It is able to let ships/boats under the bridge The bridge is often mistaken for London Bridge but London Bridge is the next bridge up the river

The color of the tower bridge The bridge was originally painted a chocolate brown but it was changed to red white and blue. That was because of the Queens silver Jubilee. Which means that it was the Queens 25th year to the throne.

Pop up facts Today it stands at 123 years old It took 432 men to finish the bridge They spent 8 years constructing the bridge
