Writing Two-Step Inequalities 8.3 Writing Two-Step Inequalities How do you write a two-step inequality?

ADDITIONAL EXAMPLE 1 Trevor is writing a paper that must be at least 50,000 words long. He has already written 23,210 words. Write an inequality to find the average number of words Trevor must write per week if he wants to finish the paper in the next 5 weeks. 23,210 + 5w 50,000

ADDITIONAL EXAMPLE 2 Write a corresponding real-world problem to represent 150 – 4x 20. Sample answer: Julie has $150. She wants to buy 4 identical bouquets of flowers, but she needs to have at least $20 left after buying the flowers. How much can Julie spend on each bouquet of flowers?

8.3 LESSON QUIZ 1. Draw algebra tiles to model 5t – 6 2. 2. 7.10.A, 7.10.C 1. Draw algebra tiles to model 5t – 6 2. 2. Connie’s dog Fido weighs 35 pounds. Her vet placed Fido on a diet. What inequality can you write to find the average number of pounds Fido must lose monthly to reach a healthier weight of 28 pounds within 6 months? 35 – 6m 28

3. Jerome spent $20 on supplies to make 50 cookies for a bake sale. What inequality can you write to find the price Jerome should charge for each cookie if he wants to have a profit of more than $60? 50c – 20 > 60 4. Write a real-world problem for the inequality 8 – 2x 5. Bob and Tino have 8 pounds of grapes and a bag that can hold at most 5 pounds. If Bob and Tino both eat the same amount, how many pounds of grapes can each eat so that the remaining grapes will fit in the bag?

How do you write a two-step inequality? Sample answer: Identify the important numbers in the problem, and use words and phrases from the problem to decide what operations and symbols to use in the inequality.
