Physical and Chemical Changes in Digestion TEK: 7.6C recognize how large molecules are broken down into smaller molecules such as carbohydrates can be broken down into sugars. 7.6B distinguish between physical and chemical changes in matter in the digestive system;

Happy Halloween! Monday 10/31/16 1) Journals open to p. 35- Digestion Stations booklet! 2) Agenda in planner 3) In your seat before the bell rings. *Please do not touch the lab supplies! Exit thru the entrance door today please!

As you wait… Use textbook p.383 to label and color the organs of the digestive system on the front cover of your booklet on p. 35! Use the powerpoint slides to complete the questions in your booklet. Complete Stemscopes Reading Science A when you are completely finished with your booklet!

Tuesday 11/1/16 Journals open to p.35 Use textbook p.383 to label and color the organs of the digestive system on the front cover of your booklet on p. 35! Use the powerpoint slides to complete the questions in your booklet. Complete Stemscopes Reading Science A when you are completely finished with your booklet!

Station 1: Mouth Directions: 1) Place a cracker in your mouth and chew for 1 minute (use timer) without swallowing. 2) After 1 minute has passed, spit half of the cracker into the Petri Dish. 3) Describe/record observations. Did your taste change? 4) Carefully add a few drops of Iodine to your cracker-saliva. 5) Record your observations. If the cracker/saliva blend turns a dark blackish color, this is an indicator that tests positive for starch/sugars. 6) Answer the questions in your book for Station 1. Materials: Timer, Saltine Cracker, Petri Dish, Iodine (handle with care, it will stain), Pipette

Station 2: Esophagus Directions: Slide down the marked pathway of the Esophagus on the ground. Answer the questions on your paper. *The ESOPHAGUS is about 25 cm long in the human body!

Station 3: Stomach Directions: Write your name on your cup. Pour a small amount of hydrochloric acid (HCl) into your cup. Add half of a spoonful of pepsin to your cup. Drink what is in your cup. When it is all gone, jump up and down for 10 seconds to “churn”. Your stomach churns and squeezes your food! Answer the questions on your paper. **Keep your cup!

Station 4: Small intestine Part 1 Directions: You may use ONE glove and a hand lens to gently view the Small Intestine of a pig. Please wash your hands after handling the specimen. Record your observations on your paper. The human Small Intestine is a long tube that is about 7 meters long and 2.5 cm in diameter.

Station 4: Small intestine Part 2 3 Parts of the Small Intestine: duodenum, jejunum, and ileum. Most of digestion occurs in the Small Intestine. Directions: Pour a small amount of pancreas enzymes into your cup and drink it. Pour a small amount of bile in your cup and drink it. Answer the questions on your paper. **Keep your cup!

Station 5: large intestine Directions: Place a piece of sponge in the bucket of water. Record your observations on your paper. The Large Intestine has a thicker diameter than the Small Intestine. It is about 1.5 meters long. Answer the questions on your paper. Directions: Place your wet sponge in your empty cup.

Station 6: Rectum & Anus Directions: You brought your wet sponge in the cup with you to this station. The wet sponge that has absorbed water is at this station because this is the storage area for feces at the end of the large intestine. Place your wet sponge in the container. Throw your cup away to represent the “elimination of waste”. Answer the questions on your paper. *The rectum is the last straight section of the large intestine before reaching the anus. The anus is the opening at the lower end of the digestive tract that controls the expulsion of feces.
