Telling Time on an Analog Clock 1st Grade Created by: Tessa Lohman Today we are going to be learning how to tell time on an analog clock. An analog clock looks like the one in the image.

Ways to Measure Time Hours-hour hand Minutes-minute hand Seconds- second hand There are many ways to measure time. One of the ways is by the hour. Another is by the minute and lastly time can be measured by the second. On an analog clock there are ways to measure each of these types of measurements. To measure the hour, you look at the shorter hand. Based on the image provided it would be the black hand that is on the three. The hour hand moves forward one clock number every hour. To measure the minute, you look at the longer hand. If you look at the image, it is the other black hand nearest the ten. The minute hand moves forward one tick every minute. Lastly, the second hand is measured by in this case the red hand. The second hand moves up one tick every second.

Important Facts 60 Seconds in 1 minute 60 minutes in 1 hour 24 hours in a day Before we move forward in learning about time we need to make sure we know these important facts about time. The first is that there are 60 seconds in 1 minute. The next is there are 60 minutes in 1 hour. Lastly there are 24 hours in a day. These facts are crucial in knowing how to tell time.

Parts of an Analog Clock Clock Numbers Orange Numbers= 5 minutes A clock is divided into 12 sections as represented by the blue numbers. The blue numbers will be found on any analog clock therefore they are called clock numbers. Each of the 12 sections is 5 minutes. As you can see by the orange numbers on the outside of the clock. These numbers are not on every clock therefore they are on the outside of the clock.

Parts of an Analog Clock 1 Minute Hopefully you already noticed but on this clock there are more numbers on the outside of the clock. Each of these numbers is there to represent one minute.

Parts of an Analog Clock 1 Minute Clock Numbers This clock looks more like a typically analog clock except it is missing the hour hand, the minute hand, and the second hand. As a refresher the numbers on the clock are called clock numbers and help determine what hour it is. On the previous clock the orange numbers on the outside of the clock showed the minutes. However on this clock the small ticks on the inside of the clock show the minutes.

How to Tell Time on an Analog Clock 60 55 5 Look at the hour hand. Look at the minute hand 10 50 45 15 Now that we know the different parts of an analog clock we are going to learn how to tell time on an analog clock. First you want to make sure to look at the hour hand which is the shorter hand. On this clock the hour hand is pointing to the 9. Then your want to look at the minute hand or the longer hand. In this case it is pointing to the 12. Remember that each clock number represents 5 minutes so the 12 is 60 minutes meaning that is at the top of the hour and 9:00. 40 20 35 25 30 9:00

How to Tell Time on an Analog Clock Look at the hour hand. Look at the minute hand 5 10 15 If you notice this clock is slightly different than the previous clock. You are still going to go about telling the time the same way though. First look at the hour hand. If you notice the hour hand is in between two numbers, the 9 and 10. When this happens you choose the number the hour hand most recently passed. In this case, the number would be 9. Now you want to look at the minute hand. The minute hand is pointing at the 6. Remembering that each clock number is 5 minutes, we realize that 30 minutes has pasted. This means that it is 9:30. 20 25 30 9:30
