BOCES Distance Learning Program Quality Access Support Section B Teacher Comments BOCES Distance Learning Program Quality Access Support

BOCES Distance Learning Program Quality Access Support Comments 1. What are the strengths of distance Learning? ______________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________ Continues to be able to bring elective courses of interest to many more students than would be possible without the system. Community building with diverse populations lends itself to this though sometimes over looked. Course offerings and electives that may not have been offered otherwise. The very strong point to distance learning for me is that I can increase enrollment in my course by reaching out to smaller districts. The diversity of environments and students different media the support and interest of the BOCES Staff. Elmo Overhead system - video capabilities-small classes. Allows more classes to be offered to students - could happen at college - good experience for students. Provides more opportunities for students to take courses that cannot be offered by their own school. BOCES Distance Learning Program Quality Access Support

BOCES Distance Learning Program Quality Access Support Comments 2. What are the weaknesses of Distance Learning? ______________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________ Schedule problems at both schools. Days off, vacations, snow days, delays are not always the same. Every now and then there is a frequently absent student or a student you'd like to see later in the day. This is not easily done from remote site--although thru their Guidance departments or attendance office contact can be made--it's a bit of a challenge. Discipline at the remote school was a problem when students at class were late. It is difficult to do "hands on activities" or "spur of the moment" things need to be very well planned to get materials to the other sites. If the fax machine goes down transferring materials is impossible. We have a new machine - life is good! Sometimes students get loud. [The schools should] screen students for this class. In the foreign language class it is difficult to incorporate (can't be done) the cultural aspects of food. BOCES Distance Learning Program Quality Access Support

BOCES Distance Learning Program Quality Access Support Comments 3. What changes would you suggest for distance learning classes? ______________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________ For first time teachers - ideas on how to manage schedule differences between schools. We need to update our system with a DVD player…we need updated technology (I.e. laptops, internet, etc) to make it function better. More support on student behavior issues at remote sites. Originally these were supposed to be set up for the best learners or at least those who were truly interested . I had 25 students this year and some were not meant to be there, just took it for a needed credit. Just try to coordinate periods with other schools even semester and quarters don't always match. Laptop computer for each teacher to use during the year. An email system for paperwork between teachers and aides BOCES Distance Learning Program Quality Access Support

BOCES Distance Learning Program Quality Access Support Comments 4. Are there any outcomes from teaching this course that you had not expected? Being able to truly connect with students across the network. Friendships between students. Many students arrived on time and were hardly ever late. I got to work with some great students at other schools. I had not expected to increase my understanding of the different culture of the different school the variances in student preparation for example Rapport with students form other schools. I did not expect [the other school] to end their classes on June 8 this seems quite early. I thought it would be easier to have students interact with each other from site to site. [The students at my school] grew very close to the students at [the other school.] When we all met for a holocaust survivor presentation the kids loved mixing. ______________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________ BOCES Distance Learning Program Quality Access Support

BOCES Distance Learning Program Quality Access Support Comments 5. Did you use any new instructional methods to effectively teach in the DL classroom? I hosted a Psychology Day which allowed my students to meet with other students. Power Point - computer simulations - video clips. I would love to be able to use this in my regular classroom but we don’t have the equipment there. Using a computer for my notes was easy and effective the computer is easy to hook up to the system. - I am able to use the internet when teaching class. I was able to bring it on the TV for all to see - Great too to use Use of more pictures/maps - elmo-facilitated this-less group work. The class focused on themes that related to movies which could be shown on these topics - Lorenzo's oil involved. I incorporated more skits and demonstrations I enjoyed the increased socialization between the two school groups. Small groups within schools and then large group games where students have to ask students [questions]- video taping ______________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________ BOCES Distance Learning Program Quality Access Support

BOCES Distance Learning Program Quality Access Support Comments 6. Did you use any other forms of communication with the students in addition to daily …...distance learning classroom instruction (such as e-mail or telephone)? ______________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________ I used email to communicate wit students when they had a problem. I have faxed, and phoned student assignments. I used the interschool mail. Faxing materials, Power Point presentations via computer. Email constantly, telephone too, I also sent mailers to them and entered all three sites in contests. We had two winners this year. BOCES Distance Learning Program Quality Access Support

BOCES Distance Learning Program Quality Access Support Comments 7A. Did you visit your remote sites? Yes No There were 13 responses to this question. BOCES Distance Learning Program Quality Access Support

BOCES Distance Learning Program Quality Access Support Comments 7B. What were the advantages / disadvantages to visiting your remote school(s)? ______________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________ We arranged a field trip two schools could meet but a third could not due to a policy of no field trips after May. The advantages were many - seeing classroom seeing the students interact together. We took a field trip together too. In the fall - 4-5 times, great to see kids in person - not in spring too busy schedule conflicts at school. The more the instructor can visit the better. I visited Tupper Lake once and I feel that this is very necessary I wish I had gone twice. Visiting is important to gain closeness with the students. I did have 2 field trips with the kids one to see Maya Angelou and to visit Walden Pond. BOCES Distance Learning Program Quality Access Support
