JFK Speech – Group Essays Clarification and Elaboration

Example #1 “This quote appeals to logos. His effectiveness is very strong.” You can’t comment on the effectiveness until you have clearly explained the logos appeal. I don’t care about the effectiveness if I haven’t understood the example.

Example #2 “Kennedy appeals to pathos when he is telling every nation, Old allies, the new states, the people in huts and villages, the sister republic, the assembly of sovereign states, the united nation, and all who are adversaries of America, that while he is in office he wants for everyone to come together. He wants cooperation and assistance to create the strong bond between everyone. Doing this he creates hope because he is so optimistic about America being united.”

“Kennedy appeals to pathos when he is telling every nation, Old allies, the new states, the people in huts and villages, the sister republic, the assembly of sovereign states, the united nation, and all who are adversaries of America, that while he is in office he wants for everyone to come together. He wants cooperation and assistance to create the strong bond between everyone. Doing this he creates hope because he is so optimistic about America being united.” How does “he wants for everyone to come together” an appeal to pathos? Explain.

Doing this he creates hope because he is so optimistic about America being united.” Wanting everyone to come together does not necessarily create hope. Draw the connection for me. Spell it out. AND how is this connected to pathos (as stated in your topic sentence)?

Example #3 “Using “we,” “our,” and “us,” made president Kennedy appeal to ethos with his audience. He makes them think as a whole and makes them feel his words should be trusted. Including them all together on a level with him he establishes his credibility which helps him work toward getting his purpose understood.”

“Using “we,” “our,” and “us,” made president Kennedy appeal to ethos with his audience. He makes them think as a whole and makes them feel his words should be trusted. Including them all together on a level with him he establishes his credibility which helps him work toward getting his purpose understood.” How? What does he say or do to make them feel this way? Does he use certain words that have a certain connotation? Explain. Spell it out for me.

“Using “we,” “our,” and “us,” made president Kennedy appeal to ethos with his audience. He makes them think as a whole and makes them feel his words should be trusted. Including them all together on a level with him he establishes his credibility which helps him work toward getting his purpose understood.” How is he doing this? I think you are referring to the “we” part, but you need to connect the use of those words with their effect. Don’t make me guess at your meanings. Don’t jump to conclusions thinking I’ll “get” what you are trying to say.

Example #4 “Ethos comes with a few tropes and schemes. Asyndeton, allusion, and periodic sentences are commonly used. They add a stronger effect into everything he is saying. The asyndeton sentences add a sense of urgency and the periodic sentences make him appear serious and vulnerable.” How does asyndeton create a sense of urgency? Explain it to me. Spell out the cause and effect relationship. The same advice applies to the periodic sentence example.

Example #5 “During this speech he uses diction in an effective way. He continuously uses we and us. Including his people in every aspect of his journey, but the most dynamic use of it is when he addresses the "adversary" of America. Instead of everyone as opposed to defining them as someone we hate, he defines them as someone on an opposing side. The audience in which this speech is addressed to ultimately suppose to feel optimism and hope about the speech.” Show the opposite for effect. “We” and “us” implies inclusion whereas “I” and “you” would indicate an opposition. Therefore, the effect is….

JFK Speech – Group Essays Usage

Example #1 1. Addressing the people in the beginning (like the vice president) doesn’t establish credibility. It doesn’t show that he knows important people because he is the most important person at this occasion. Remember, he’s the president!

Example #3 Incorrect: “ethos comes with..” Incorrect: “made president Kennedy appeal to ethos” Correct: The author/speaker builds/establishes his ethos Correct: The author’s/speaker’s ethos is…
