Objective, Agenda, & Homework Objective: Students will analyze an author’s use of rhetorical devices by annotating a speech. Agenda: Finish: Annotate Rhetorical Devices in JFK Speech Notes: How to Make Index Cards Work Time: Plan/Practice “Would You Rather Speech” Homework: Periods 1, 2, 7: Study for Latin roots matching quiz tomorrow. Periods 3, 5: Latin Roots #66-70 due Friday.

NOTES: Rhetorical Devices Repetition: a technique in which a sound, word, phrase, or line is repeated for effect or emphasis Parallel Structure: repetition of grammatical structures Anaphora: repetition of word/phrase at beginning of sentences Allusion: an indirect reference to another literary work or to a famous person, place, or event Imagery: descriptive words or phrases that recreate sensory experiences for the reader using one or more of the five senses Metaphor (and Simile): a figure of speech that makes a comparison between two things that are basically unlike but have something in common Rhetorical Question: a question asked solely to produce an effect or to make an assertion and not to elicit a reply

JFK Speech You will need 5 highlighters to share with a partner. Copy the following key on to the bottom of the JFK speech. Repetition = yellow Allusion = green Imagery = pink Metaphor/Simile = blue Rhetorical Question = orange

How to Make Effective Index Cards https://www.wisc- online.com/learn/humanities/linguistics/sph3102/creating-and-using- presentation-note-cards Important Points: Write what you have to say (important points you might forget), and also how you want to say it. Delivery cues can be included. They must be hand-written, and can be an outline or concept map/drawing. Plan logical blocks of material and number/label the cards. Only write on one side of the notecard. Write a minimum amount in large letters, preferably in dark or colored ink. You should still look at the audience 95% of the time.

“Would You Rather” Speech Planning In your notebook, write down the three “Would You Rather” questions, in case you change your mind on the question you choose. Choose one question from the “Would You Rather” card. Plan your speech that will answer the one question. Think of 2 rhetorical devices that you can use. Create 1-2 index cards to help you remember what you want to say. Include the question and your 2 rhetorical devices. Practice your speech to make sure it fits in the 1-1.5 minute window.
