Cisco Router Technology Prepared by :- Dipti Swami

Overview Topics :- Overview of cisco Introduction of Router How Router Works Example of Routing Technology Communicating With Routers Thank you

Overview of cisco:- Cisco is a one company. It was founded in 1984, in california by a small group of computer scientists from stanford University. Cisco engineers have been leaders in the development of internet protocol based networking technology & the company core development areas of routing & switching as well as advanced technologies such as:

IP communication Network security Wire-less LAN Storage area networking Home networking Video systems Applications networking services

Introduction of Router:- What is Router ? Router means a device that forwards data packets between computer networks. We use routers in internet but we are not aware of it. They act as security gets by checking traffic against access permission lists.

Routers can simultaneously support different protocols, effectively making virtually all computers compatible at the internetwork level. Routers filter out unwanted traffic by isolating areas in which messages can be “broadcast” to all users in a network. They automatically learn about new paths and select the best ones, eliminating artificial constraints on expanding and improving internetwork.

How Routers Works :- As the name specify “The Router” exactly it works like that to find the next route. They route data from a LAN to an other Router, then another Router, and so on until data is received at its destination. Routers also act as traffic cops, allowing only authorized machines to transmit data into the local network so that private information can remain secure.

Example of Company:- Animators HR department CEO Secretary Janitor Internet Router Hub

Example of Routing Technology:- We take an example that how our telephone call is routed across the country. If we contact one person who is at the long distance from us. Now we want to call them then a telephone system establishes one stable circuit between your telephone and your relative’s telephone. The circuit may involve many number of steps including fiber-optics, copper wires, & satallites.

This end to end chain ensures that the quality of the line between you and your relative will be constant. Whatever information is sent across the internet is first broken into 1500 bytes packets. The Packets are transmitted across the number of routers, each one sending the packet to the destination device. The Packets will be transmitted via the best available route this type of network is called packet switched network through router.

Communicating with Routers Most users of internetworks don’t communicate with routers, they communicate through them. Network administrators must deal directly with individual routers in order to install and manage them. Routers are purpose built computers dedicated to internetwork processing.

They are important devices that individually serve hundreds or thousands of users. Routers don’t come with a monitor, keyboard, or mouse, so you must communicate with them in one of three other ways: From a terminal that’s in the same location as the router and is connected to via a cable.

From a terminal that’s in a different location as the router & is connected to it via a modem that calls a modem connected with router with a cable. Via the network on which the router sites.

Access to Routers Console port Auxiliary port Network interface Local cable Internetwork Modem Dial-up connection
