Citing lines in poetry To cite 1, 2, or 3 lines of poetry use quotation marks. Use a slash to indicate the break between lines. Put the line numbers in parentheses. Place the period at the end of the line number(s). Paulk writes, “Your children must attend a school that doesn't educate. / Your Christian values can't be taught, according to the state. / You read about the current news, in a regulated press” (17-19). The speaker states that, “while I am bedded upon soft green money/that grows like grass” (Ignatow 5-6). *Remember that when you mention the author in your sentence you don’t need to put his/her name in the parenthesis. When you don’t, you must.

The visitor is Thelen Paulk’s poem is someone who may be warning Americans that we are beginning to lose the freedom we once have. For instance, he says: “You buy permits to travel, and permits to own a gun, Permits to start a business, or build a place for one. On land you believe you own, you pay a yearly rent. Although you have no voice in how the money's spent.” (13-16)
