The Sea The Earth has massive oceans that store the majority of our water. At sea, the sun heats the top layer of the water, this is called evaporation. Wind also speeds up evaporation.

The atmosphere The water vapour rises into the air, where it begins to cool down. Then the vapour forms into clouds which are blown towards the land.

Inland The clouds gain more and more water droplets, and get even cooler as they hit hills and mountains. When the cloud is ‘full up’ with water, it begins to rain. If it is really cold the rain can form snow.

What happens to the water? Some water drains into rivers and streams. Some water sinks through the soil and rock to become groundwater. Some water is used by plants and animals.

This is how the water cycle works 4. When the cloud is full it rains, this is called precipitation. 3. The water vapour condenses and forms a cloud. 2. The water turns into a gas called water vapour, this process is called evaporation. 1. The sun warms the surface of the water. 5. The water runs back to the sea through permeable rocks and streams. This is how the water cycle works

Glossary Evaporation Condensation Precipitation It is the process of a liquid heating to form a gas. Condensation It is the process of a gas cooling to form a cloud. Precipitation Rain, snow, sleet or dew formed by condensed water vapour.

Quiz 1. What is evaporation? 2. What is condensation? 3. How are clouds formed? 4. What happens when the gas condenses? 5. Where does the water go when it is raining?

Thankyou for listening. Any questions or comments?
