His Legacy What did Napoleon do regarding the following? Education The legal System The Church The Economy

Napoleon’s Actions fueled the sense of Nationalism Nationalism = sense of pride and devotion to one’s country Similar feelings also spread to the people that Napoleon conquered. Where do you see a sense of Nationalism in your own lives today?

Europe in 1789 FRANCE Take Note: France currently occupied that which is shaded dark gray and labeled France

1812: Napoleon’s Empire- He Kept it all in the family Joseph Napoleon (oldest brother) King of Spain Louis Napoleon (younger bro) King of Holland Jerome Napoleon (Youngest Bro) King of Westphalia Joachim Napoleon (bro-in law) King of Naples Eugene Napoleon (stepson) Ruler- Kingdom of Italy . Take Note: Everything both light and dark green is under Napoleon’s Control

Napoleon Goes into Russia Napoleon ends up stationing troops near the western border of Russia. The Czar, Alexander I got nervous and began to station troops near the border. Napoleon thought he would teach the czar a lesson and moved east into Russia, with new recruits, spoiled food from the summer heat, and little supplies. The Russian army would clash with the French but then continually retreat, burning the fields as it went…why would they do this?

The French Arrive in Moscow What was left of Napoleon’s Army pushed on to Moscow When they got there they found it in flames Who did it ??? What supplies (esp. food) Napoleon could have gotten from the city, were now gone. He trekked home in October, and they had to go back the way they came, across a barren landscape

The Trip Home Soldiers in Napoleon’s Russian Campaign Napoleon really didn’t travel home with the troops. He took a sleigh ride back to Paris. -Russian Peasants even attacked French soldiers on the way back -The harsh winter is what really decimated the French Army Soldiers in Napoleon’s Russian Campaign 600,000 began the trip 250,000 died in Russia 94,000 taken prisoner 150,000 wounded or deserted

Napoleon In Exile Napoleon’s disaster in Russia gave his enemies new Hope. Russia, Prussia, Austria, and Great Britain allied themselves against France. Napoleon raised a new army but he was defeated in near the German city of Leipzig in 1813 and soon after the allies marched into Paris. Napoleon had to give up his throne and he was sent to Elba with a small pension and around 400 guards.

Napoleon Makes a Comeback Those that overthrew Napoleon replaced him with a Monarch (King Louis XVI’s brother Louis XVIII), and France was given its old borders. How do you think the people felt about this? After about a year, Napoleon catches a boat ride back to France. Many still hate him for the war, but many remembered his reforms. The group of troops sent to arrest him, swear their loyalty to him. He arrives in Paris to cheering crowds.

The Battle of Waterloo Napoleon’s new Army meets up with the British under the leadership of the Duke of Wellington. Near a Belgian village called Waterloo. The Duke won with the help of the Belgians, Dutch, Germans, and eventually the Prussians. Casualties totaled about 50,000 men It was the end of Napoleon This time he would be imprisoned on the Island of Saint Helena in the South Atlantic, after trying to escape to America.
