Repository Software Marc Goovaerts, Hasselt University Library OceanTeacher Academy Training Course Development and Management of e-Repositories 8 – 12 April 2013

Overview Introduction Software Repository-harvester model OAI-verbs Exercise: evaluation of Eprints - DSpace

Repositories & Harvesters Submission: Documents, data sets, … are made available in Open Access Local access – local tasks Harvesters: Global services: Search – Community development Ex. OAIster, Scientific Commons

Repository – Harvester model Repositories: to collect content Harvesters: to provide services

Harvesters Problems of harvesting: Alternative approach of harvesting: Limited metadata standards (Dublin Core) => Limited services Classical harvesters can’t compete with Google and Google Scholar. Ex. AVANO has stopped in the aquatic community Alternative approach of harvesting: Higher metadata standards Community building ex. VOA3R

OAI verbs Ex. NIO - OceanDocs Identify ListMetadataFormats ListSets http://www.oceandocs.org/odin-oai/request?verb=Identify ListMetadataFormats http://www.oceandocs.org/odin-oai/request?verb=ListMetadataFormats http://drs.nio.org/oai/request?verb=ListMetadataFormats ListSets http://drs.nio.org/oai/request?verb=ListSets ListIdentifiers http://www.oceandocs.org/odin-oai/request?verb=ListIdentifiers&metadataPrefix=voa3r_dcds

OAI verbs Ex. NIO – OceanDocs OAI repository explorer GetRecord http://www.oceandocs.org/odin-oai/request?verb=GetRecord&metadataPrefix=voa3r&identifier=oai:http://www.oceandocs.org:1834/4091 ListRecords http://drs.nio.org/oai/request?verb=ListRecords&metadataPrefix=oai_dc OAI repository explorer to query repositories: http://re.cs.uct.ac.za/

Repository software Open Source: Commercial: EPrints (http://www.eprints.org/): Department of Computer Science E-Repository e-Prints Soton Dspace https://uhdspace.uhasselt.be http://www.oceandocs.org Commercial: Digital Commons, Open Repositories Other software with OA functionality: ABCD, Greenstone, some ILMS

Repository software Overview: - see http://www.OpenDOAR.org Downloaded from http://www.opendoar.org on April 5, 2013

Exercise 1 Submit an article in: Evaluate: EPrints: Dspace Demo: http://demoprints.eprints.org/ Dspace Demo: http://demo.dspace.org/ Evaluate: The process of submitting The quality of the metadata

Exercise 2 Evaluate repositories of Eprints and DSpace: On their search and browse possibilities On their OAI-possibilities Use OpenDOAR (http://www.opendoar.org ) to find the repositories To find the OAI-URL Query using the OAI-verbs (spec. ListMetadataFormats) (See previous slides)

Comparison Eprints - DSpace - subject: too general + type - structure Dspace - preliminary question - no controlled vocabularies - no type frames - communities-collections
