Current electricity

Circuits Circuit  a closed loop of conductor through which electricity (electrons) may easily move.

Current Current  The rate at which charged particles (electrons) flow through a conductor. Symbol- I Unit -Ampere (A) Measured using an ammeter Conventional current - the flow of positive charge. (opposite to the direction of electricity).

Potential Difference Potential Difference  The change in electrical potential energy from one point in a circuit to another. Symbol- V Unit –Volt (V) Also called voltage Measured using a voltmeter

Resistance Resistance  A property of a substance that determines how much current will flow. Symbol- R Unit –Ohm (Ω) Can be measured , but is usually calculated. Defined by Georg Simon Ohm. Can be thought of like electrical friction

Ohm’s Law The potential difference of a circuit is equal to the product of the current flowing through the conductor and the resistance of the conductor. V = I∙R

Circuits There are two types of circuits Series circuit Only one path for electricity to flow. Parallel Circuit More than one path for electricity to flow

Electrical Schematics Since most people are not artists, we have developed a standard system of drawing electrical circuits called schematics. In a proper schematic diagram, all lines are straight and all bends are right angles. When you see the schematic diagrams for the different types of circuits you see why they have the names they have.
