Personal and Professional Development Life Long Learning CRTPA Professional Designation Strategy 2017

Background The Circuit Rider Trainer Professional Association (CRTPA), continues to explore and develop strategies for professional designation. Professional designation will distinguish association members as a distinct group, recognized as professional trainers and mentors to First Nation adult learners in the specialized fields of Water Resource, Water Recovery and Building Systems Technology. Profession-wide designation external to the Circuit Rider Trainer Professional Association is preferred, done by an independent body with an expected level of recognition in competency gained by members. One reviewing body for Water/Wastewater and another for Building Maintenance trainers. WHERE TO START?

We needed more information and we got it! SURVEY Work Experience Trainer Experience Education Certification Age Trade Background

> 750 years of work experience What did we discover? 100 yrs. 650 yrs. We have experience! > 750 years of work experience

What did we discover? We are experienced and educated Trainers!

What did we discover? We have industry qualifications! We have wisdom! Provincial Certification 2015 We have industry qualifications! We have wisdom! We are a diverse group of individuals!

The Survey CRTPA has found the member survey data invaluable in understanding who we are as an organization and setting goals for the future. Important information on education, training, certification, experience and other relevant (soft and hard) skills can be discovered and needs identified in future surveys. We (CRTPA) will continue to survey our membership annually to understand what those needs are and seek out resources in education and training to recommend to our members as part of their personal and profession development.

Personal and Professional Development Individual personal and professional development of the Circuit Rider Trainer is an important step toward obtaining a professional designation as an instructor and mentor to adult learners. Let’s look at the definitions and differences between Personal and Professional Development. Personal or Professional Development

Personal and Professional Development Personal or Professional Development Personal and Professional Development Personal Development When you think of personal development, think about what skills you need to accomplish the results required, both in your role as a trainer and for life in general. It is about improving your talents and potential, both in and out of the workplace. By having a thorough understanding of what you need to achieve and how to achieve it, you can develop the necessary skills by way of a solution.

Personal and Professional Development Personal or Professional Development Personal and Professional Development Personal Development Establish exactly what skills you need to succeed in your role. This may be influencing skills, you may need to manage teams, or inspire individuals. It may be that you need to be able to manage upwards or have excellent delegation skills. When you are able to identify these needs, you are able to work towards a personal development plan.

Personal and Professional Development Personal or Professional Development Personal and Professional Development Personal Development Some examples of personal development (soft skills) are: Leadership training Management training Time management Handling difficult situations and conflict management Communication skills

Personal and Professional Development Personal or Professional Development Personal and Professional Development Professional Development Professional development involves developing yourself in your role to entirely understand the job you do and how you can improve. It involves enhancing the necessary skills to carry out your role as effectively as possible and is something that will continue throughout your working life. With changes to our working lives happening every day, be it economical change, amendments in legislation or even the advance of technology, it is important to develop your skillset to remain effective in your career.

Personal and Professional Development Personal or Professional Development Personal and Professional Development Professional Development Effective professional development involves ensuring your knowledge and understanding of your area of expertise for your career is always at the highest possible level. It is the acquisition of skills and knowledge for career advancement, but it also includes an element of personal development. Broadly speaking, it may include formal types of vocational education or training that leads to a career related qualification. It can also include informal training and development programmes, which may be delivered on the job in order to develop and enhance skills.

Personal and Professional Development Personal or Professional Development Personal and Professional Development Professional Development Some examples of professional development (hard skills) are: Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel or PowerPoint) Health and Safety Accountancy or budgeting Technical Report Writing Regulations and Compliance These could be delivered in many different methods, such as classroom based learning, eLearning, coaching, consultation, mentoring and more..

Personal and Professional Development CRTPA strategy for professional designation will included all members. We (CRTPA) will assist our members to enhance necessary skills to carry out their role as a trainers as effectively as possible through personal and professional development. We shall encourage life long learning to be continued as part of their development. Challenges for CRTPA members in achieving a professional designation will vary with each member thus we encourage members to evaluate their current personal and professional development plan.

Education The CRTPA shall develop and forward information to our members regarding educational resources for CRTs as part of a communication strategy promoting the merits of lifelong learning for the purpose of, personal, professional development and career advancement. CRTPA approved list of educational resources shall be made available in the coming months to all members via emails, social media (Facebook) and website to promote and encourage CRTs participation in educational programs relevant to their work. This communication strategy is an important long term effort toward CRTPA professional designation in the Building Maintenance, Water and Wastewater industries.

Seeking Resources in Education In conclusion we shall review the latest survey data after the 2017 CRTPA AGM has ended. This years’ survey was part of the 2017 membership renewal and registration process. We asked about your currently training and what relevant training you would be interested in receiving as Circuit Rider Trainers. The data collected will help us determine the nature of the training needed. We shall assess available resources for training and develop a recommended list of educational opportunities then distribute it to the CRTPA membership. Please send suggestions and provide what information you can regarding education resources relevant to work in Building Maintenance and Water/Wastewater training.

Seeking Resources in Education Suggestions are welcomed that provide information regarding training and education resources relevant to Building Maintenance and Water/Wastewater Trainer development! Send suggestions to: djennex@me.com CRTPA Seeking Resources THANK YOU!

What Have We Discovered? Feasibility of professional designation evaluated against the education, experience, and competency of the CRTPA membership has found that the requirements in professional designation options present challenges. Professional Designation Options: Environmental Professional (EP) in “Education and Training” by Environmental Careers Organization (ECO) of Canada, and possible Building Operator designation by ECO Canada (2011 labour market research study!), Professional Operator (PO) by Association of Boards of Certification (ABC), Systems Maintenance Technician (SMT® ) by Building Owners and Managers Institute (BOMI) Canada, The Building Officials' Association of British Columbia (BOABC) , or similar
