Effects of the Fall of Rome Germanic tribes took over Roman lands. Hundreds of little kingdoms took the place of the Western Roman Empire in Europe. Initially, there was no system for collecting taxes. Kingdoms were constantly at war with one another. People lost interest in learning.

Pepin II 700 – Pepin II was able to establish Mayor of the Palace hereditary, successors were Frankish in everything but name. Charles Martel (Pepin II’s son) halted a much feared Muslim advance in Western Europe “The Moors” He left a strong Kingdom to his son Pepin III who took the throne from the King and found himself freely elected as the King

Getting in Good with the Pope The Pope, while in France, asked for help against the Lombard’s who was ravaging Italy, whom obligingly Pepin III defeated. After defeat, he gave his conquered land, which surrounded Rome, to the Pope (Referred to as the Papal states) Upon agreeing to defend the Pope he created an alliance with him (great for both sides)

Charlemagne 768 – 814

Charlemagne Great military leader, defeated Saxons, Lombard’s entirely, and pushed Muslims further into Spain 800 on Christmas day, the Pope placed a crown on his head and declared him “Emperor of the Romans” He had unified Europe for the first time in 400 years!!! Government Split in Regions, ruled by a “Count” who raised armies and controlled laws within their region

Charlemagne Created ‘miss dominici’ = the Lord’s messenger, they listened to complaints, reviewed Count’s rule Education regulations was a big fan of education Had the Bible massively reproduced Organized schools for children of Noble’s and intelligent children from the lower class

Empire •Charlemagne wanted to expand his country more to the east and to the west. •During the time he ruled, his kingdom was usually in war; he waged more than 50 military campaigns.

After Charlemagne Louis the Pious, son of Charlemagne, was not the great ruler his father was, left his Empire upon his death to his three sons who split up the Empire The Frankish Empire fell due internal feuds, invaders from every direction
