George washington Carver and The Wright Brothers

Objective By the end of the lesson, SWBAT explain what the Wright Brothers and George Washington Carver invented, and how these inventions change the way people lived.

George Washington Carver George Washington Carver was born in 1864 and died in 1943. He is famous because he changed the way and what people farm.

Farming in the South Before Carver The South only planted Cotton. The problem with cotton was that it was not worth a lot of money and farmers did not get rich from selling it. Think sharecropping.

Carver and his work Carver researched and studied agriculture (farming) and came up with a way to grow peanuts and sweet potatoes in the south. Growing Peanuts and Sweet Potatoes were easier on the soil and they helped farmers make more money than selling cotton!

Peanuts Galore! How would growing peanuts and sweet potatoes change the lives of farmers in the South?

Sweet Potatoes Yeah! Peanuts and Sweet Potatoes brought in more money than cotton. Peanuts and Sweet Potatoes were nicer on the land than cotton so the land stayed nice for longer. You could eat Peanuts!

Recipes and Things Carver did a lot of research in the lab and came up with lots of uses for peanuts - gasoline, cosmetics, dyes, medicine, and of course peanut butter! These recipes made peanuts and sweet potatoes more valuable!
