Presentation transcript:

CH 6, sect. 1 – Sharia Law Developed by Muslim scholars after the death of Muhammad. It is based on interpretations of the Quran and the examples and deeds of Muhammad. It regulates all aspects of Muslim life to include family life, business practices, government, and moral conduct. It does not separate religious matters from civil or political law.

Muslims must practice honesty and justice when dealing with others. Muslims are forbidden to gamble, eat pork, drink alcohol, or engage in dishonest behavior. Countries that practice Sharia law – Saudi Arabia, Somalia, Iran, Afghanistan, + many others. Issues sometimes arise with Sharia Law in non-Muslim countries.

Sharia Law Examples – don’t write this, just read. The mosque and state are not separate. Imprisonment or execution, may be imposed on anyone who leaves Islam (an apostate). Drinkers and gamblers may be flogged. The hand of a male or female thief may be cut off. Adulterers may be stoned to death. A man may legally divorce his wife by pronouncing three times “you are divorced.” A man may be polygamous with up to four wives. A woman must wear a head covering and maybe a facial veil (disputed among Muslim scholars).
