Eye Safety Always wear safety goggles - especially when working with chemicals, acids, bases or any type of flame. Always flush eyes with running water immediately if you get a substance in them and notify your teacher. Avoid wearing contacts in a laboratory situation.
Safety Equipment Know where to find the nearest fire alarms, fire blankets, fire extinguisher, and eyewash fountains. Know the fire escape route from the classroom.
How to Keep a Neat Work Area 1. Put away all unnecessary books and papers. 2. Tie back long hair and keep loose sleeves secured. 3. Never eat or drink in the lab. 4. Never apply makeup in the laboratory. 5. Avoid wearing hairspray or hair gel on lab days because it can be flameable.
Sharp/pointed objects Always be very careful when using knives or other sharp objects. Never cut an object while holding it in your hand.
Tips to remember when heating objects in the lab. 1. Always wear safety goggles. .2. Angle the test tube away from yourself and others when heating materials.
Electrical Safety Never let an electicial cord hang over the edge of a table. Do not use equipment with damaged cords. Turn off and unplug equipment when finished.
CHEMICAL SAFETY Always wear goggles when handling chemicals. If you spill a chemical on your skin or clothing rinse it off immediately under water for at least 5 minutes and inform the teacher. Never mix chemicals together unless instructed to by your teacher.
Animal and Plant Safety Never bring an animal into the school building without approval. Do not eat any part of a plant or plant seed used in the lab.
Glassware Check all glassware before use for cracks before use. Make certain glass containers used for heating are made of heat-resistant glass.
