Overview Need for women leaders Debunking the myth of Superwoman Zonta’s impact on leadership Set your sights Attributes for personal success Share the wealth

Why So Few Women Leaders? History Institutionalism Culture Learned “Inadequacy” 3. We know about historical barriers—the whole social norm that says: men earn the money and women tend the home and raise the children. We know that is still true in some parts of the world. We know that, for many women, they tend the home, raise the children AND work full time outside of the home. However…let’s look at that more closely. (Share personal experience or observation.) Is it true for you? Is true for most of the women you know? What about the impact on children of equal partnership between parents? How about institutionalism—the “good old boys” network? What about the “successful women’s” network in Zonta? (Ask for examples) Then we have culture—the culture where women don’t help other women but view them as a “Threat.” And--most cruel of all—what we do to ourselves by saying—or at least believing --“I’m not good enough. Someone else could do it better.” How many of you have heard that when you are looking for officers in your club? How many of you have thought that about yourself when a leadership opportunity arose?

Myth of Superwoman

Creative Partnership Realize you CAN have it all—just not at all at the same time Recognize leadership skills developed through mothering and running a home Develop truly shared responsibility

Why Women Don’t Rule We eliminate ourselves We don’t join Team Women We allow “divides” to work against us—motherhood, politics, race, color…. We play the other guy’s game Every women for herself isn’t working

Let’s create the Zonta leadership lab. We can do this together. We can commit to changing the leadership gap for women. It can start in Zonta—in your own district—in your own club. Let’s recognize and remove those barriers to accepting leadership. Let’s monitor defeatist thinking and reach out to support and encourage one another. We can learn to provide helpful feedback and share our personal and professional resources. Let’s take courage from the example of our leaders. We are NOT in competition. We are in this together!
