Amazon Rainforest By Alfie Gosney

Fact 1. The Amazon rainforest is located in South America and covers 2.1 million square miles of land. Brazil has 60%, Peru has 13%, and Colombia has 10% while other countries have very small parts of the rainforest within their borders.

Fact 2 The Amazon rainforest has existed for at least 55 million years.

Fact 3 The Amazon rainforest is home to a very diverse range of species, many of which are not found elsewhere in the world.

Fact 4 There are approximately 3000 fruits that grow in the rainforest that are edible.

Fact 5 There are believed to anywhere from 400 to 500 tribes of native South Americans living along the Amazon River's rainforest. It is believed that many of these tribes (as many as 50 or more) have never come into contact with outsiders.

Fact 6 There are vampire bats in the Amazon rainforest as well as poisonous dart frogs.

Fact 7 When rainy season arrives in South America the width of the Amazon River can reach 120 miles in width.

Fact 8 Although the Amazon River is the second longest river in the world, it carries the most water of any river worldwide.

Fact 9 During the past 40 years, at least 20% of the Amazon Rainforest has been cut down

Fact 10 In the Amazon it rains about every four days in a week, that’s a lot of rain. It can add up to 10m a year. That is the same height as a three-story building! No wonder they call it a rainforest!
