The creative color wheel Color Theory The creative color wheel

We talked about colors and mixing them and their symbolic meanings We talked about colors and mixing them and their symbolic meanings. Now we are going to play with color and create a creative color wheel. Your guide lines are as follows: 1. You will first experiment on cheap copier paper mixing colors and create all 12 colors on the color wheel using primary colors to mix them. You will then choose one color and create a value scale with it by starting with mixing it with white to create a light tint of the color gradually going to the full chromatic color (its highest intensity) then adding black to create a shade of that color. This you will hand in and it will be graded as an assignment. 2. You will then creative a painting of your choice in the style of your choice with these restrictions: a. It must follow the order of the colors in the 12 color color wheel in some fashion or another. For instance yellow will follow yellow yellow orange and then orange then red orange then red and so on. b. It must be a good composition like we discussed with a power point a few weeks ago. c. It must be creative. d. It must be on watercolor paper and fill the whole page. e. Colors will be done with water color paints. f. It must be neat and the paper cannot be folded or cut smaller.

Project Rubric: Is it neat and was the paper folded or cut smaller? Is it on watercolor paper and does it fill the whole page? Is it a good composition? Is it late? Are all 12 colors done with water color paints? Is it creative, not just a boring wheel? Does it follow the order of the color wheel? Did student put effort into it or did they wait till the last minute and threw something together?

And now for some samples, but first a quick looks at a boring color wheel:

Ok, now is the time to paint…
