Higher education in the innovation society: Central European perspectives University values for today: Central European perspectives and challenges Conference organised by the Magna Charta Observatory on the 29th Anniversary of the Magna Charta Universitatum Pécs, 30-31 August 2017 Gábor Halász ELTE/OFI Budapest This presentation is based on the outcomes of the research projects entitled „The emergence and diffusion of local innovations and their systemic impact in the education sector” (No. 115857)

From caterpillar to butterfly The development of Dutch universities since 1945 The university of tradition The democratised university The bureaucratic university The professional university The innovative university Understanding the nature of the innovative university

Understanding the role of universities in the „innovation society” Universities doing innovation within their own organisation Universities contributing to innovation in economy and society

Understanding innovation within universities Alternative approaches to understanding innovation in universities Complex models (combining several perspectives and analytical dimensions) The challenge of measuring The unit of analysis and the object of measurement Measurement instruments and innovations surveys The LSE model The Innova model 4

What can we learn from university innovation surveys? Innovation as process Innovation as product

Conclusions Two perspectives needed: (1) supporting innovation outside and (2) doing it inside Defining and measuring university innovation : challenging but possible Universities show remarkable internal innovation capacity/activity but this is very uneven Managing university innovation is a task of high complexity University innovation in national policies have to take into account national contexts

Thank you for your attention!
