Photosynthesis SPI 0507.3.1 & SPI 0507.3.2 Present the dilemma: Use Voki to create a plant that needs food….use your voice
I can COMPARE how plants and animals obtain energy. I can identify photosynthesis as the food manufacturing process in plants. I can COMPARE how plants and animals obtain energy.

Flashcards Pg. 54-60 Use your book to define the 6 new vocabulary words for this week. On the white side, you will write the term (for example, stomata). On the lined sided, you will write the definition. You have 12 minutes on the clock!!!
Let’s Review If you observe this cell under a microscope, what can you conclude it is? How? What is the function of the organelle shown? What chemical is within the organelle? What is its purpose?

WHat is photosynthesis? Plants must use sunlight to make their own food. Photosynthesis is the process of making food using sunlight. Photosynthesis occurs in the chloroplast of the cell, where chlorophyll captures energy from the sun. In the chloroplasts, water and carbon dioxide are combined to make food in the form of sugars. Oxygen is produced as a waste product.
What are the raw materials needed for photosynthesis?
What do leaves do? Leaves have the job of carrying out photosynthesis. The roots absorb water from the soil. Water travels up the xylem to the leaves. Carbon dioxide enters the leaves through stomata( tiny pores found under the leaves and on the stems). The sugars are carried to the plant’s cells by the phloem. Most oxygen exits the cell as a waste product.
what do leaves do? The guard cells open and close the stomata. When a plant has too little water, the guard cells shrink _ the stomata to preserve water. When the plant has plenty of water, the guard cells swell _ and pull the stomata open, allowing water and air to leave the plant. The epidermis is on the outermost layer of the leaf. The top leaf surface has a waxy cuticle that prevents moisture from evaporating. Look at the diagrams in book on page 56 & 57 Photosynthesis occurs in the chloroplasts of cells that are underneath the epidermis.
Think About It Suppose you did not water a plant for two weeks. Would you expect the stomata to be open or closed? EXPLAIN. On your whiteboard,SUMMARIZE the work that leaves do. Include the given words: epidermis, guard cell, stoma, and Photosynthesis Include the given words: epidermis, Photosynthesis, stomata
what is the photosynthesis and respiration cycle? When animals eat a plant, they absorb the carbohydrates of the plants. When plants or animals need energy, they get it from the stored carbohydrates. When plants need energy, oxygen is used to break down the sugars. This is called cellular respiration. The sugar that plants produce during photosynthesis is called a carbohydrate. A carbohydrate is made from carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen. Plants store sugar as starch. The cell walls of plant cells are made of cellulose. Starch and cellulose are both complex carbohydrates. Cellulose is a complex carbohydrate.
In Photosynthesis, plants use carbon dioxide & water to make sugar & oxygen. In Cellular Respiration, plants use oxygen to break down sugars and release carbon dioxide.
What are energy pyramids? An energy pyramid is a diagram that shows the amount of energy available at each level of an ecosystem. At the bottom of the pyramid are producers. When a producer is eaten, about 10 percent of the food gets turned into herbivore or omnivore tissue. The rest is turned into heat energy. The producer level is the largest because it contains the most organisms and therefore the most energy. There are fewer numbers of organisms and less available energy at each ascending level of the pyramid.
Think About it What do you INFER will happen to the number of hawks in a forest if the mice population it preys upon is decreasing? SUPPORT your claim. In a prairie ecosystem, would you expect a rabbit or a hawk population to be larger? EVALUATE the ecosystem.
