Properties of Waves.  Since the waves move back and forth objects move up and down. Imagine riding a water wave. You move up and down because the wave.
Year 1 Science 6.P.1.1. What are waves? “Moving energy” Formed when a force causes vibrations through space or matter Vibrations form wavelike disturbances.
Waves and Wave Properties. A wave is a disturbance that carries energy from place to place. A wave does NOT carry matter with it! It just moves the matter.
Amplitude The max. distance the particles move from the “rest position” to: The more energy a wave has → The greater its amplitude Compression or rarefaction.
Waves. A. What are Waves? - Rhythmic disturbances that carry energy through matter and space. B. Medium - Type of material that waves can pass through.
What is a wave? Waves are rhythmic disturbances that carry energy through matter or space A medium is the material through which a wave travels.

Waves. Definitions Wave: a disturbance that transfers energy through a medium. The matter does not experience net movement, but vibrates about some rest.
Waves!!. What are waves?? WAVES are regular or rhythmic disturbances that carry energy through matter or space. Remember, a wave is really just an energy.
What are waves? Honors Physics. What are waves? A wave is a periodic disturbance in a solid, liquid or gas as energy is transmitted through a medium.
Waves Different types of waves carry signals to TV’s or radios. Sound and light waves move all around. What are waves? Waves are even responsible.

Wave Properties 7SCIENCE

Review What are the two main types of wave? What is the difference? Mechanical and electromagnetic What is the difference? Mechanical waves must travel through matter How do you describe the shape of these waves? Transverse and compressional waves What are the parts of a wave? Crest, trough, amplitude and wavelength What type of wave are sound waves? Mechanical, compressional

Wave Properties Waves have characteristics we can see and measure If you see a wave in the ocean, the distance it rises above the normal level of the water is called the wave’s amplitude Amplitude is half the distance between the crest and the trough in a transverse wave In compressional waves, the amplitude is greater when particles are squeezed together

Amplitude A wave’s amplitude measures the amount of energy the wave carries Waves with large amplitudes carry more energy than those with small amplitudes Example: bright light has a greater amplitude than dim light, and sound waves that are loud have greater amplitudes than soft sounds

Wavelength and Frequency Wavelength is the distance from a crest to crest or trough to trough Wavelength is important to the study of light: wavelength determines the color The frequency of a wave is the number of waves that pass a point in ONE second Measured in waves/second, called hertz (Hz) Do short wavelengths have a higher or lower frequency? Why? Why does a wave with a long wavelength have a low frequency?
